Product Review: Gdiapers are great! Summary: 5 StarsLet me start by saying that it took me over a year and a half to finally get these. I procrasinated because 1) I was worried I'd be changing my baby every 2 hours when she usually gets changed every 4-6 or when she has a BM. 2) I have 2 kids and have Grave's Disease- all leave me tired and weak. 3.) I was afraid of spending a small fortune on diapers.
I finally broke down when I got an awesome coupon code to use for another online store so I decided to try them out. I figured that if I didn't like gdiapers I could always resell them as they hold their value well.
As it turns out, I really don't change my daughter any more frequently than I did with disposable diapers. I used Seventh Generation diapers and gdiapers cost less than $5 more per case (sign up for Amazon's subscription shipping for the refills, you'll save 15%).
Here are a few things I've learned to make using gdiapers easier:
If there is poop in the diaper I keep the diaper folded and then unsnap the liner with the refill intact. It seems to make clean-up easier. I just bring that part to the bathroom to dump out the poop (I don't flush the refill since we have an older septic system) and then I use a wipe to clean off the excess poop from the liner and then wash it with some antibacterial soap and hot water.
I thrown the little g pants and liners that my daughter wore that day into the tub with her. Of course there is no poop on these and no dirtier than she is... I wash them out with her baby shampoo and then just hang them in the shower. They're dry by morning. About once a week or as needed I'll thrown all little g pants and liners in the wash, but washing them in the tub keeps them fresh and I don't run out of the little g pants.
I try to make sure that the refill stays flat. After I put the diaper on my daugther I pull them up so that they fit snugly against her body (as shown on the gdiaper website video) and then I readjust the refill once it is on her by pulling it to the edges of the liner from the inside. I've only had gdiapers leak once and that was when my daughter went to bed early and wasn't changed for about 16 hours. Even then it wasn't a big mess. Just her pajamas and blanket got wet.
If you are strapped for time or change your little one at night I would keep the gdiapers "preloaded" so that they're always ready to go.
My daughter is 16 months old and I use 4 little g pants and 6 liners (2 starter kits) and that has been working fine for me. I also go through about 25 refills a week, just to give you an idea on how many you might need. She is also small for her age- 17 pounds and 30 inches and the mediums fit her well.
Product Review: Good idea, not so good in practice Summary: 2 StarsAfter hearing good reviews about these, we bought a starter pack to try. Then a 2nd. We really gave it a shot.
At first, they seemed kind of okay. Very convenient anyways. but like the previous reviewer, it seems at least half the time, baby would pee and it would just leak out and get all over the cover (and everything else!), at which point, I might as well be using cloth.
It's getting close to 4 weeks now and we're giving it a go along with the Mio Bambino, but I have to say, in recent weeks, the gDiaper has been falling very much out of favour. Simple reason, it doesn't work. It leaks way too much.
I also have an issue with the flushable/disposable liner. It's not really flushable (unless you have some amazing toilet). You have to at least rip it open first, which brings about other issues. Mainly that water absorbing particles which fly around (the ones that didn't get wet). If you haven't noticed, these things suck up a lot of water and puff up significantly. Imagine just a couple of these particles getting into your lungs and puffing up...
