Wahl 9918-617 Groomsman Beard and Mustache Trimmer
Works great. Easy to use. Relatively quiet. Travels well.
Product Review: Best Beard Trimmer on the Planet Summary: 5 Stars
I never use a traditional razor to shave my beard because it created terrible ingrown hairs on my neck. If this happens to you, then this beard trimmer is for you. It cuts REAL short without any attachments, which is perfect for me. It is about as close as you get get without using a blade and shaving cream. Never nicks or pulls hair and comes with plenty of attachments if you need to trim sideburns or alike.
Product Review: Better than expected (Updated) Summary: 4 Stars
This is my second beard trimmer. I bought a Remington for around $35, a few years back, and I was disappointed the moment I took it out of the package. Since I'd never owned a beard trimmer before, I didn't really know what to expect, but to put it simply, the Remington was a vibrating piece of plastic (update: I believe Wahl makes a plastic version of this exact trimmer, but I didn't realize this at the time of my review.) It wasn't the least expensive trimmer on the shelf, but it had a lot of fancy details and seemed like a good bargain to a newbie like me. It would be difficult for me to list the good things about the Remington, because there were so few and they were far outnumbered by the bad. There wasn't much I could do with the Remington, but I made use of the few things I could do with it, until the battery started to die and I decided that I wanted a trimmer that could give me a stubble look (it was pretty much impossible to do this with the Remington, even without the attachment, because the blades were just so bad.)
So I started by reading reviews on trimmers and found that the Wahl brand seemed to meet my expectations of quality, features and price better than the rest. Although I'd planned to buy a more expensive model, I finally picked this one up on the cheap and I couldn't be anymore satisfied. Upon opening the package, it was obvious that the Wahl trimmer was much higher quality than the Remington I had been using, despite being ~$15 less. Unlike the cheap, plastic Remington, the Wahl is made out of metal with rubber grips. I don't know how to explain the blades, but they're very clearly much better too and the contrast in how they cut is like night and day.
Like every trimmer I've ever used, the attachments leave a lot to be desired. As noted by others, they are plastic, but I've never seen anything else with a trimmer. They are also a little difficult to put on, and even though they leave a lot to be desired with their performance, they're still better than the ones that came with my Remington.
I'm basically thrilled with my purchase, having found the Wahl to be of higher quality than I'd expected. I will say that despite all the reviews touting Wahl as an American company that makes it's trimmers in the States, my trimmer says made in China on it. Regardless, I expect to own this trimmer for a long, long time and I'd just like to thank Wahl for making such an excellent product at a time when most manufacturers don't seem the least bit interested in making quality products. This all goes without mentioning the incredible price, which was much less than what I paid for the considerably inferior Remington trimmer. So thank you Wahl!
Update: After using this for a few days, I've come to realize that I was a little too enthusiastic with my original review. The trimmer, itself, is a good quality product at a low price. The attachments, on the other hand, leave a little to be desired; enough so that I'm returning mine. Specifically, the stubble guide doesn't cut close enough, and like with every trimmer I've ever used, removing the guide doesn't cut at a consistent level, which apparently bothers me more than some. The longer attachments probably work fine for how they're intended to work, so if you're just looking for an inexpensive, simple trimmer with no extra attachments, then this would be a great choice. I'm still very impressed with the quality of Wahl products, though, and I'll be looking to see what else they have to offer soon.
Product Review: Beware! Summary: 1 Stars
I'd like to warn buyers about false information published on this Web page. Instead of "MADE IN THE USA" you must read "MADE IN CHINA"!!!
It is really Chinese trimmer - cheap and unreliable. So beware!
Product Review: Built for durability, great value, but not complete ease. Summary: 4 Stars
Pros: This trimmer is made to last. Few cheap plastic parts to break, which was the problem with my prior trimmer. It seems strong and trims really well. Comes with extras, like the mini brush to get the little hairs out of trimmer blades, oil for the blades, and a mustache comb. Long battery life, and also is rechargeable.
Cons: Too hard to switch blade guards. Not the most ergonomic shape. The base is way too small for the trimmer and all the accessories.
Bottom line: Great value. It'll last a long time, unlike some of the more expensive trimmers. Definitely gets the job done, but you still have to deal with difficult blade guards. Great purchase for the price.
