Product Reviews of Vicks 1.0 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier

Product Review: A Comment on Bad Design
Summary: 2 Stars

I have just bought this humidifier and was unpleasantly surprised with one of its design features that turned out to be a let down for me. When I was carrying the unit into another room to plug it in, suddenly water started pouring down from the unit's bottom. There is a hole there which is understood to be made just for that - to let excess water out in order to protect the motor. I've looked inside to find out that the plastic water tray has walls which protrude only a little bit above the water level. Even a small movement must have bounced the water enough for it to go over the edges as I was walking. If only the tray walls were an inch or so taller, one wouldn't end up panicking over a growing puddle in the middle of their floor. I realize however that the manufacture would refer for us not to move their humidifiers around so that we had to buy more of their products to put in each room, but I personally wouldn't want to choose to have a load of humidifiers all over the place.

Product Review: A Quite Decent Humidifier
Summary: 5 Stars

After reading many, many, negative reviews of various and sundry humidifiers, I thought that this one seemed like the best deal. I have had it for about a month now and haven't experienced a single problem with it. The high setting is, as other reviewers have noted, noisy. Nevertheless, the low setting emits a low hum that is actually quieter than a fan. It has not leaked even once, although I could see how if the tank were not situated quite right on the base, it could conceivably leak. Filling the humidifier and then moving it would probably cause leaking as well, as the sides of the water tray aren't very high. The vapor, as noted in the packaging, is invisible, but I can tell that its producing humidity, as the room (10x12, approximately) does get progressively more humid and I can hear occasional "glug"-type noises from the humidifier when it has to gulp more water. Based on my current usage (mostly just running it at night), I imagine that the replaceable filter will last me about two months or so. Filters seem to be a bit difficult to find, but they are available through Amazon and are quite reasonably priced. Overall, I'm quite pleased with this humidifier for the price.

Product Review: A good unit for a small room
Summary: 5 Stars

Hey, this is a decent little evaporator humidifier for a small room. I bought one for a bedroom about 12 x 10 and it does a good job. On the low setting it is nice and quiet.

People who complain about how loud it is on high probably have never owned an evaporator before. Any of them are going to be loud on the high setting--and this one is not as bad as some. Think of it like the heater fan in your car. When you put it on high it's loud, but you only run it on high in extreme cases. If you have to run this humidifier on high all the time then you did not spend enough money to buy one properly sized for the space you are conditioning.

In the past I have owned Hunter and Duracraft which were larger units and did a good job. But, since they are larger you have more water to carry, more to maintain, etc., just a little more hassle to deal with. This one is small, easy to fill, and easy to maintain.

As far as the leakage complaints, I was concerned about that so I placed it in a plastic kitchen tray. I've lifted the tank a few times, rolled the cart it is on slightly, I even carried the whole tray to another area of the house and it did not leak at all.

I haven't had it long enough to comment on the complaints about the evaporator pads, but cleaning and maintenance is normal with this type of humidifier. You can't just keep filling them with tap water and do nothing. You will have issues. Keep in mind too that kitchen odors, smoke, etc. will get pulled through the pad and that's going to contribute significantly to the degradation of the pad. Since this one is small I decided to use distilled water in it. It only takes about a gallon and I don't have to fill it every night. I think by using distilled or reverse osmosis filtered water you will greatly minimize the issues with the pad. An occasional dribble of bacteriastat and humidifier water treatment will probably help as well.

I'm going to go ahead and give it 5 stars because I've owned several different types of humidifiers and this one seems to be well enough designed to do a good job and is priced fairly for what you get--a very basic, no frills, small room humidifier.

Product Review: A humidifier that does not do much
Summary: 2 Stars

I needed a humidifier for my (apartment) bed room and this one seemed to be quiet (from the reviews) and fairly cheap so I bought it. I have had this humidifier for about a week now and I have to say on quiet mode it is pretty quiet compared to the last one I bought (and threw away due to noise). However it really does not do much as a humidifier. I can have my door closed (my bed room is fairly small) with the humidifier on the quiet mode and it would not noticably increase the humidity in the air. My skin is still fairly dry as it used to be without the humidifier and my nose is still stuffy so I have to say this isn't a really good humidifier at all. I know for a fact it does something as the water in the tank is evaporating, but I cannot/barely feel the difference. Perhaps if I had 2 of these running upstairs and 1 downstairs it would be much better, but the fact that it cannot do its job in one small bed room is pretty annoying. I also wouldn't feel like changing/cleaning 3 humidifiers every day, not to mention all the more filters you will have to replace every so often.
Also, on the 2nd fan setting it is too loud for use unless you are not in the same room.

Conclusion: Kind of a useless humidifier as it does not do its job well (on silent mode), but it is pretty silent on the silent mode. On loud mode it is too loud for me; however, I will use it on high mode if I am not in the same room. I would suggest getting a different humidifier that actually noticably changes the humidity in the air. Or perhaps buy more than one of these and place is in varying spots throughout your residence.

Product Review: Absolutely love it
Summary: 5 Stars

I have purchased and thrown away at least 3 other humidifier's prior to this one. I really like this one. The maintenance is so much easier and so far no scaly build-up like I had with the others. I love that the basin tray can go in the dishwasher. I put the filter in the sun to dry out weekly. I am very pleased with this item and haven't experienced any of the problems others have mentioned. Very happy!!
