Product Review: Good idea, poor execution - Save your money

I loved the idea of this product. The thought of gently waking to gradually increasing light or sound was very appealing. Unfortunately it doesn't quite work out as planned. Here are my issues:
* The light comes on very abruptly, not gradually. Yes, it does increase in brightness, but the initial "on" is very bright...enough to wake me immediately rather than gradually.
* The lamp itself is noisy. When the light comes on, it has a very noticeable buzzing noise that contributes to waking me immediately, instead of gradually.
* The display is VERY bright, even when turned down to the low setting. It's literally bright enough to cast shadows throughout the bedroom. There's no way to turn it off. I had to tape a piece of dark plastic over the front of the lamp to dim it enough that it wouldn't keep the room unnaturally bright at night.
In short, I have not received any of the supposed benefits of gradually waking. This, in practice, is no different than any other alarm clock.

I've had two sunrise-type alarms before this one and this is the best of the three. The adjustable time to wake/sleep, on-board radio, and natural sounds were selling points. I especially like the sleep setting. As a person who wakes up in the dark at least five days out of seven, this is a life saver.
One negative: previous sunrise lamps had a sound alarm that played at the end of the light fade-in. This lamp would have been a five-star with that feature. Thankfully, my PDA functions nicely in that capacity.

I also live the the Seattle Area, and winters are dark and rainy for months on end. Your body loses it's day/night clock. This lamp worked great, for about eight months, then the alarm broke. Now, all I get is a horrible screech in the morning. So, that comes to 20 dollers per month to use it for it's lifetime...:(. I like the design & function of this lamp, though I did have problems with the lamp initially. Verilux sent me a replacement lamp in the mail and then sent me a shipping label to return the old lamp. Now that is customer service! Happy sleeping and waking!Product Review: 2 lamps and neither worked

I bought this for my wife as a Christmas present. The concept is a great one and probably the only reason for 2 stars instead of 1. The first lamp did not work out of the box. All of the features of the lamp (sounds, radio etc) worked fine but the light did not come one. So we returned the lamp for a replacement. Once the second lamp arrived we were so excited that we plugged it in immediately. The light on this lamp did work. HOWEVER, when the alarm function was used, the light would not come on. You could turn the light on manually, but when you set the alarm only the sounds would work. We have returned the lamp for a refund and are now looking for other options. The quality of this lamp is just not worth the high price, and after 2 tries we are done.
