Product Reviews of Verilux Rise & Shine Natural Alarm Clock Deluxe Bedside Lamp, IvoryProduct Review: Good idea, poor execution - Save your money Summary: 1 Stars
I loved the idea of this product. The thought of gently waking to gradually increasing light or sound was very appealing. Unfortunately it doesn't quite work out as planned. Here are my issues:
* The light comes on very abruptly, not gradually. Yes, it does increase in brightness, but the initial "on" is very bright...enough to wake me immediately rather than gradually.
* The lamp itself is noisy. When the light comes on, it has a very noticeable buzzing noise that contributes to waking me immediately, instead of gradually.
* The display is VERY bright, even when turned down to the low setting. It's literally bright enough to cast shadows throughout the bedroom. There's no way to turn it off. I had to tape a piece of dark plastic over the front of the lamp to dim it enough that it wouldn't keep the room unnaturally bright at night.
In short, I have not received any of the supposed benefits of gradually waking. This, in practice, is no different than any other alarm clock.
Product Review: Great While It worked Summary: 2 Stars
I've owned this for 4 months and loved it until last week. The only thing working on it is the radio and I've only used the radio once in the past! Well, the radio doesn't actually work - it's on. And won't shut off without unplugging it. The light doesn't work, the clock doesn't work, and none of the buttons respond. Thoroughly disgusted with this.
Product Review: Great for adjusting to the winter Summary: 4 Stars
This lamp is very good. It helps me fall asleep at night with a dimming light, and helps me wake up with a brightening light. My only gripes are that the speaker is pretty weak, and the snooze button seems to be too short.
Product Review: Great idea lacks quality Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased this item on special for $49.95 and was excited to get it. I went home and tried it and immediately, the lamp would not come on. After trying several bulbs and on both AC and battery power, the light would not come on after I pushed the button several times. Everything else seemed to work fine until I tried to shut the alarm off. The wake button jammed and would only stay in alarm mode.
I think this could be an awesome idea if the company would just invest a little more in quality and caring about their consumers.
Product Review: Great idea, horrible execution... Summary: 1 Stars
I just got one of these, and I must say I'm terribly disappointed, and the reviews here have reinforced that my problems were not unique to me. Here are my beefs, after just one night of use:
1) The display, even in dimmed mode, is too bright, it lights up the room more than some night lights I've seen.
2) It hums audibly just from having the lamp turned on, the dimmer the light the more the hum, it seems, so as soon as it lights it makes the most hum. So much for a nice easy wake up.
3) The sound feature is worthless, either using the radio or supplied sounds, since the pitiful sound system amplifies the aforementioned hum so as to drown out anything else coming over the speaker. It is irritating to the point of making any sounds for wake-up unusable.
4) The radio reception is horrible, and doesn't even display the radio frequency on the lit display. The old $12 alarm clock that this was going to (but alas, will not) replace has a better tuner.
5) The gradual turning-on of the light begins too bright, it woke me up as soon as it came on.
6) Overall, it seems rather flimsy in terms of construction.
Since I live in Canada, between the exchange rate and shipping, I spent nearly as much on this thing as I did on my 80GB iPod. I chose this model because it seemed to the best on the market, and I was horrified to see something so conceptually simple that could cost this much and be so poorly designed and manufactured. Wish I could recommend a better model, but I would definitely not recommend this one.
