I bought the HappyLite at the recommendation of my therapist to help with the winter months. I use it year-round and it seems to help me regulate my sleep cycle. I usually use it for about half an hour in the morning, while checking email. The light's not too harsh, but you're also not supposed to be looking directly at it. The price tag scared me off for years, but there are occasional sales here on Amazon (I got mine for $149).Product Review: Does the job

I have experience with three different light therapy lamps. For 10 years I have used the Northern Light Technologies SADelite. I love the lamp, but it finally bit the dust, so I decided to go for something a little less bulky.
The Verilux HappyLite is not a very nice light to be around. While the physical design of it is great, the quality of the light it gives off is cold and leaves practically leaves you feeling more depressed than before you used it. It gives off a very white/blue, cold light.
The SADelite is great. I love the quality of light it gives off. But it is also very bulky and unattractive, and you occasionally need to tighten the screws so the lamp stays up. But, it also has the advantage of being able to use the light as a lamp without being directly exposed to it. Sometimes it's nice to work by it for a couple hours without getting all cracked out from being exposed to the direct light.
If I can't get my SADelite repaired, I am going to get the Northern Lights TRAVelite. I had the pleasure of using my mom's, and it gives off as much light as the HappyLite, but gives off a less depressing, warm light, and is smaller than the HappyLite.
While the HappyLite gets a lot of positive reviews because it may be effective at alleviating symptoms of SAD, there are better lights out there.

I received my Happy Light about two weeks ago. The first two days I couldn't tell for sure if it was helping my mood and energy levels. Now, there is absolutely no doubt that the Happy Light is working very well to lift my mood and my energy levels. It feels a lot like drinking a cup of coffee in the morning - I use it for one hour each morning and it leaves me energized and less moody. Plus, this feeling seems to carry right through the entire day. What a wonderful product! I'm so glad I tried it after years of wondering if such lights really work.Product Review: Excellent for SAD

I purchased this as a gift for my room mate who suffers from SAD. It seemed to have an immediate effect. She turns it on first thing in the morning every day, and loves it. I am really pleased that I purchased this item. It was one of the more expensive items offered, but I think it was well worth the price.
