Product Reviews of Travelon 1st Class SleeperProduct Review: Lower back pain? A steal at $29, and especially good for people <6' and <210 Summary: 5 Stars
MY PROBLEM: I get lower back pain when I attempt to sleep in coach class. Sleeping in coach class is tricky for me because (a) if I sleep upright, my upper back isn't well-supported & my legs can't stretch; but (b) if I move my butt down the seat to stretch my legs, my lower back is no longer supported.
I saw the nice reviews on here and bought this item for Christmas as a gift to myself.
MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE PRODUCT: Generally speaking, it's been great. I have now taken two moderately-long flights (DTW-LAS-DTW) with it, as well as a 4+ hour Econoline Van Ride in the rear seats.
The 1st Class Sleeper is supposed to give you full-torso support by first providing the needed 'wedge' to support your lower back, and then some additional support to support your upper back (since it would otherwise be off the seatback). I have found that this wedge is not large enough to provide enough support.
Thus, I fold it in half (the manual calls this the 'lumbar support mode'), and both semi-inflated halves thus end up supporting my lower back.
To help support my neck and upper back, I combine this 1st Class Sleeper with the Brookstone NAP Travel Pillow (I don't use the U-shaped one, I use the wedge-shaped one). It takes a few minutes of adjusting to get them to work together, but once you settle in, it's truly very comfortable.
Note that in order to get the most out of this 'lumbar support mode,' it's best if you're not unbearably uncomfortable sitting with your butt on only about a hand's-width-worth of depth on the seat. If you are OK sitting on that little of a part of chair, then this 'lumbar support mode' that I'm talking about would work for you. Those with really big butts might not be able to appreciate this mode I'm describing here. Also, those with really big bellies might not be able to appreciate it because then your front can possibly come really close to the seat in front, if the person in front is reclining too. I'm 5'8" and 175 lbs, with a 33" waist. Anybody <6' and <210 lbs should be able to fully appreciate it.
All things considered, I was able to almost 'sit flat' with my setup.
BOTTOM LINE: If you get lower back pain when you attempt to sleep in coach class on the plane, you should definitely consider getting this product. If you are also <6' and <210 lbs, it's really a no-brainer. I'd recommend combining this with some kind of sleep pillow if you tend to need a lot of lumbar support.
Product Review: My sciatica was killing me until . . . Summary: 5 Stars
a friend loaned me her 1st class sleeper for a cross-country plane trip in July. As suggested, I folded it in half for lumbar support and with 3-4 puffs of air I sat in cattle class in comfort and was able to walk off the plane without pain shooting down my leg to my foot. I used the sleeper unfolded on 2 transatlantic flights in September and still was virtually pain free when getting off the plane. The lumbar support is amazing. Although the shooting pains have gone, I still find comfort using my 1st class sleeper when I sit in the car, read or watch TV for long periods of time. This is the best $29.95 I ever spent!
Product Review: Necessary for travelers with back issues Summary: 5 Stars
I bought the First Class Sleeper for a flight to Asia. I have lower back problems and was tired of getting dirty looks from other Economy class passengers from taking all available pillows in the surrounding seats for back support. For both my flight to Asia and the return trip, the airline stewards and stewardesses noticed the pillow, love it, and asked me for details on where to get one. Using this pillow, I had NO BACK PAIN after a long plane ride for the FIRST TIME EVER! The First Class Sleeper has earned itself a permanent place in my travel kit.
A few notes about this product:
* The pillow is inflated through a tube, not unlike the tube that they have on the life preservers (you know those yellow life preservers under the airplane seats where you blow into a tube to inflate.) The tube has a twisty bit at the end, which you turn to keep the air inside the pillow. To deflate, you unscrew the end of the tube and fold the sleeper pillow to let the air out.
* The Sleeper pillow does not fully inflate. So count your breaths, because the pillow will not look like it has air inside when it really does. It helps to over-inflate (10 breaths) and then decrease the air until you get to a comfortable level
* Since you are sharing the seat with your pillow, make sure that your legs have room to stretch under the seat in front of you. Having a large bag under the seat will make things uncomfortable because you will have no room for your legs.
* The pillow comes with a slim carrying case bag that's about 10-12 inches long. The size of the carrying case makes it a bit awkward to carry if you are not using a carry on bag.
* Practice using the pillow on a chair at home before road testing it. Given the amount of time that you have to get to your seat, get your stuff in an overhead bin, and get settled in your seat before someone else is demanding access to the seat beside you, it helps to understand how the pillow works so that you can inflate and get settled very quickly.
In all, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this product, if for no other reason than the fact that for the first time in years, I am not popping pain meds during and after a long plane ride.
Product Review: Nice idea which did not work well for me Summary: 3 Stars
After seeing a number of favorable reviews, I tried this product for a couple of trans-Pacific flights. It made me a little more comfortable, but I am not convinced it increased my sleep, which is what I most wanted. Because it expanded my carry on pack, I am unsure if it is a net benefit to me.
This pillow survived being pulled out of then squashed back into a backpack, so it seems adequately durable. I liked the way directions are printed on the pillow.
Not a big success for me but a good quality item which works for other buyers.
Product Review: Not so great Summary: 2 Stars
The material is different than you would expect. It does not have any brush velour...
I tried to use it on my outbound trip - which was a red-eye flight. I did not use it on my return flight because I did not find it helpful.
It does not provide very good neck support.
