Product Reviews of Taylor 5599 440 Pound Tempered Glass Body Fat-Body Water ScaleProduct Review: Dead within 90 days - Stay away! Summary: 1 Stars
I bought one of these scales at Target. Was pretty useful for the time it lasted... I'm not entirely sold on the concept of detecting your body fat/water %/muscle % through solely stepping on the measuring plate, but I suppose it is okay information to "know."
However, three months in, and the scale has stopped responding. I can turn it on just fine (stepping on the measuring plate, or pressing the "SET" button on top to choose a pre-defined profile), but as soon as the scale is ready to measure, stepping on the plate does not trigger any reaction - it stays at 0.0. Pretty bad quality control, and judging from the number of disappointed/angry customers here, I'm not the only one.
Lesson learned. I'll get my next scale here AFTER reading reviews.
Product Review: Didn't last long Summary: 2 Stars
This scale was nice while it lasted, but after a few months, it errored out any time we tried to use the advanced feature. It still will show weight, but it seems a waste to be unable to use the other features.
Product Review: Disappointed Summary: 2 Stars
I paid $43 for this scale at Target and was disappointed to find the following:
1. The body fat analyzer was way off. I'm 128 lbs, 5'8", male and the scale told me I am overweight! This is even after following the directions in the manual to use damp feet for better accuracy.
2. The weight readings were inconsistent. I would step on the scale, step off and back on and get a difference in weight of 1 to 2 lbs. My sister also noted it was giving a reading of about 2 lbs more than her gym scale. I finally gave up and returned the scale after discovering that it differed by 2.5 lbs from the one at my doctor's office.
I expected much better quality for the price and was quite disappointed with this product.
Product Review: Dissapointment Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this because I like the sleek design and I was excited about the features. You can save the height and age for multiple people but it does not save your weight, BMI, or other statistics. I am disappointed with this purchase for a few of reasons. First, the box the scale came in appeared to be opened and the scale had water marks on it straight out of the box. The packaging was not good. The scale arrived into a very large brown box with crumbled up newspaper print. The box is huge compared to the actual product. When you stand on the scale it doesn't always turn on. Pushing buttons doesn't even turn it on sometimes. I usually have to remove the batteries and replace them in order to get it to work. The last problem with this scale is minor but it does bother me: Every time you step on it, it dips down and makes a noise. It feels unstable and as if it will break- and I weigh about 140.
As for accuracy: The weight seems to be right on target. I honestly haven't really tracked the other features because I've had so many problems with it.
I definitely plan on returning this scale on Monday.
Product Review: Err1 - Defective after 1 month Summary: 2 Stars
I bought the Taylor 5599 scale at local Target retail. It seemed like a decent scale for the 1st month, until it suddenly started displaying Err1 whenever I stepped on it. My previous Counselor brand scale worked perfectly for 20 years. The Taylor 5599 manual says Err1 indicates over 440lbs is on the scale. I can assure you I weigh far less than 1/2 that. From other reviews, it seems I'm not the only one to get the Err1 error. I tried removing the batteries to reset the electronics, with no luck. The scale has a lifetime warranty, so I called Taylor's customer service number (866-843-3905) and spoke to someone. There was no easy resolution to the Err1 error - perhaps a spring broke was the diagnosis. They would replace the scale if I'd send it to New Mexico...at my expense, of course. I might get a new one after 3-4 weeks (they blamed this delay on a backlog, and UPS - who can deliver overnight if you pay for it). They would not cross-ship me a new unit while the defective unit was in transit. The manual says NOT to return it to the retailer, presumably so the retailer doesn't know of the defective units they're selling. Despite this, I took the scale back to Target who readily exchanged my defective unit for a new one, without the original packaging or receipt. I've just validated the new scale works. My hope is the quality of the new unit is better than the last, but only time will tell. In the end, the scale looks nice and my hope is the new unit provides years of accurate weight measurement, but I'm not betting on it.
