Product Reviews of Tanita BC533 Glass Innerscan Body Composition MonitorProduct Review: Don't get rid of excess weight WITHOUT Tanita!! Summary: 5 Stars
Many food commercials train us to stress eat. Your typical weight scales CAUSE stress. Tanita, turns previously stressful days into some of the happiest days of my life. First an analogy. My father used to say some car dashboards had gauges and others had idiot lights. He said an idiot light only tells you when you've got a problem, if then, but a gauge lets you see exactly where you're at on all levels, your water, oil, battery charge.... all of those things are better addressed as soon as they start tilting, not after there's already a problem.
I've been sticking to my workout and excess fat elimination plan like super glue. Went from 180.4 to 182.6 in 24 hours. In the past that would have depressed and stressed me. I'd have eaten four cups of sonic ice and my tongue and lips would still be numb. But my fat had decreased, my water had increased (much needed, I've been running too low for the lion's share of my program, and it takes plenty of water to excrete fat) and best of all my muscle mass had increased dramatically. I hadn't done anything wrong and thanks to my Tanita scales, the weight which is like an idiot light was only telling a small part of the story.
In fact, a Dr.'s tanita scales showed me I was messing up big time. I weighed there once a week for three weeks and each week I lost fat and MUSCLE. Considering I do serious strength training an hour every other day... that was very upsetting. Found out I was eating too few calories and working out too fast. I upped my calories and slowed down and wah lah!! Finally, my muscle is coming back!! I've lost 120 pounds, how much of it was muscle? I'll never know. Because I didn't see that doctor until September and I didn't get my own Tanita scales 10/11.
If I had it all to do over again, which I never will because seriously, i am too lazy for the hard ass work of being fat - I'd never have done it without an omron heart monitor, a monthly measurement with a myo tape and a good set of Tanita scales. I wish you'd market yourself at the daily plate and get them to give us a place to chart our Tanita measurements daily. I'm using a notebook and pen, feels outdated, but who cares. I'd fight someone over these scales. Please, do yourself a favor, if you're under 330 pounds, and working out and eating right to get rid of excess fat - get a good Tanita. I LOVE MINE. I'm too lazy to lose weight inefficiently. If you are too, you gotta have this.

THIS IS THE BEST SCALE I HAVE EVER USED. IT IS VERY ACCURATE AND EASY TO USE. IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY! I HAVE HAD ALOT OF COMPLIMENTS ON IT. IT IS VERY STYLISH AND LOOKS GOOD IN BOTH MY BATHROOMS. WONDERFUL BUY! GREAT PRICE AND FAST SHIPPING. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS SCALE.
Product Review: Easy to set up, fairly consistent readings Summary: 4 Stars
I found my Tanita scale very easy to set up & start using right out of the box. The manual I received was easy to understand and clear on how to use the different functions. The consistency of measurement is the best I've ever had on a scale - I can step off & on several times & still get the same reading for weight, body fat %, hydration, etc. I don't necessarily think the body fat measurement is entirely accurate, but I don't mind since it's consistent enough that I can at least see trends and from month to month know if it's up or down relative to where I started. Great scale at a good price, I would recommend this to anyone who is hoping to track their general health.
Product Review: Easy to use, but is it accurate for petite Asians?? Summary: 5 Stars
This is a wonderfully easy-to-use scale (note: you have to step off of the scale--at least I had to--before pressing the other option buttons to get readings of water %, physique rating, etc.). No trouble whatsoever keeping my balance on the scale. However, I'm suspicious of my readings because I'm in my mid 20s, 5'2," East Asian, and 114 lbs. I only started working out a few months ago and have never really done any strength training, and the scale tells me I have the metabolic age of a 12-yr-old (or lower, since the scale reports lower ages as "12"), and that my physique is 8 (which supposedly makes me an "athlete")--8 is just below the highest score of 9 = "very muscular." I know I'm nowhere close to being "very muscular" by any standard! Plus it tells me at 20% body fat that I'm "underfat"--I only started working out because I felt slow/heavy due to gaining over 10 lbs of flab by eating a bunch of junk food over the past few years--just don't think gaining more fat would make me feel/be healthier! I think I do have a higher-than-the-average-American metabolism (otherwise I'd be way heavier than I am now given my eating habits), but I just don't think that, beyond overall weight and body fat % readings, the scale meaningfully reflects where I "rank" relative to all other females of my age and height. I.e., I think compared to other East Asian women of my age and height, I'd have a physique rating of 5 (average). But other than this subjective disbelief, which may/may not be unfounded, the scale is fine. I had my body fat measured by skinfold calipers at a gym a few weeks ago and that % is within 1% of the scale's reading.
Product Review: Encouragement for Your Fitness Routine Summary: 5 Stars
This product enables me to know how much of my weight is fat AND how much is muscle AND bone AND water. As a woman I obviously want to be sure I have enough bone and now I can see how my various exercises increase my bone weight over time. Also, any weight I have gained in muscle is GOOD weight, so as that increases it is another thing to be encouraged about. Since muscle weighs more than fat, I am not as concerned about my actual weight as much as getting the muscle and bone weights up and the fat weight down. When I hit a weight plateau these small changes keep me motivated since they can change even when my overall weight stays the same. Note that this product is NOT for you if you exercise 10 hours a week at an intense level. This scale would not be accurate for you. The scale gives you a score for your metabolic age (and fitness level), and my more fit husband has a metabolic age of 12 which is clearly silly since he is 48 years old. My metabolic age is a more accurate 43 (I am 49) so you can see the difference that more intense exercise can make as to the accuracy of the scale's measurements. I think the scale is well worth the price and Amazon's price was the best I could find.
