My old Waterpik SM 2U shower head finally gave out on me after more than 20 years. It had cracks around it and had started to leak.
I found a great buy on a new one and ordered two (one for me and one for my son). I got them today.
The new one might LOOK like the old one, but it is not made nearly as good. My old Waterpik SM 2U shower head is at least twice as heavy as this new one is. The new one seems to be all plastic. I figured that was just the way everything is going these days though and screwed it on.
I used plumbers tape around the joints and got a good connection with the threads. Leaking around the threads should have been the least of my worries. Where the ball actually pivots in the shower head, water was squirting out all over the place.
I had to tighten the thing up so much that the shower head can barely be moved now. Needless to say, I am very disappointed. I should have paid more and bought one locally so that I could have returned it.
The company that makes these things should be ashamed of themselves. What used to be an excellent product is now just another piece of plastic crap.
I don't know if the shower head will eventually seat against the pivot ball or not. If it doesn't, I will chalk this up as a bad experience and go with another brand.
My son has told me forever that he wanted me to leave him my old showerhead in my will. I don't know if I even want to give him this other new one that I bought if it is going to squirt water everywhere.
We will see.
UPDATE: 12-31-10
I have removed one of the two stars I gave this thing. I tried to install my son's showerhead on Christmas morning and the head just flat out broke away from the part that screws on the shower arm.
There is no way that should have happened as I did not screw it on that tight. Now, I am stuck with a broken showerhead. I will buy him another brand toy replace this one I suppose as I doubt anyone will be wanting to give me a new one for it
On another note: I finally got mine to (almost) quit leaking. I had to tighten it up so much that it is now stationary. It still leaks a few drops during a shower. I may pull my old one back out from under my sink and put it back on. I can live with IT leaking as it's over 20 years old.
