Product Reviews of Systane Nighttime Lubricant Eye Ointment, 0.123-Ounce Tubes (Pack of 2)Product Review: Great for dry eye - but expensive Vaseline! Summary: 4 Stars
I deal with a lot of dry eye issues due to MS and medications and I also have Keratoconus. While this is not a product I use religiously, I definitely use it several times per week instead of using gel drops in the middle of the night. The primary ingredient in this is Vaseline ... but it is sterile. I think that is one of the main differences. It is a costly tube of Vaseline (White Petrolatum) and another ingredient called Mineral Oil (at 3%).
So, what are you really paying for? I am not sure except the name and the sterility and the tube/delivery. The ointment feels more like Vaseline with a little bit of oil. The ONLY reason I spend the money on this is because of the sterility factor, the tube which only delivers a tiny thread of ointment also must keep the contents within the tube sterile. I don't want to mess with errant bacteria in my eye EVEN if it is cheaper to buy a tube of Vaseline.
Expensive (that is why I am giving it 4 stars) but very, very useful for what it does.
Be aware that this is definitely a night ointment and will impair your vision. So I wouldn't recommend it for day use or driving.
Product Review: The Best!! Summary: 5 Stars
If you have dry eyes, this is the best, thickest, most protective, most moisturizing, longest lasting, etc. You can't see worth a darn after putting it in, but it is for nighttime. You'll be asleep. I have had Lasik & have very dry eyes. I needed to try all the different eye lubricants out there for night & day. This is the best. Read the ingredients! The higher the mineral oil content, the thinner the ointment. Those will be less effective, but, you can see better when you get up in the night.
Product Review: great product for severe dry eye Summary: 5 Stars
This is wonderful product for night-time use by people with severe dry eye. My boyfriend likes to sleep with the AC on and I would wake up with my eyelids scraping against my eyes before I found this stuff. He thinks, and I agree that the tiny tube is absurdly overpriced for what's basically vaseline with some mineral oil, but the stuff works.
This product is a little hard to apply at first - you are supposed to put it inside your lower eyelid which can be a little intimidating. For the first couple weeks I just had my boyfriend squirt it onto my eye, and this was messier but still helped. If you're going to put it inside your lower eyelid, use a mirror and don't move your eyes around before you do the second one. Your first eye will get blurry from the jelly and you'll be flying blind.
I have read with this in my eyes a few times when I couldn't sleep and it's not impossible if you blink a lot, but I agree with the other reviewer that it's maybe not the best plan.
Product Review: the best Summary: 5 Stars
