Product Reviews of Swing Arm Compact Fluorescent Desk Lamp

Product Review: Good but plain task lamp
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had one of these for about ten years. Finally the plastic pivot that lets the head swivel broke. I used this as a main reading lamp for the last three years and was constantly adjusting the head so it's not surprising it finally gave up the ghost and cracked off.

It's a very plain looking lamp but I have no complaints. The arms and springs are well balanced. I can move the lamp to any position and it stays put. The base is weighted well and the lamp head can be moved anywhere within its range without causing the base to tip over. The head can be swung from side to side and rotated 180 degrees. I have always been able to move to exactly the position I want. The arms are each 14" long and this gives the lamp a very good reach. I have sitting on a fireplace hearth and use it as a reading lamp for my recliner which sits a couple of feet away.

The bulb is a standard 13 watt size that can be bought anywhere. The reflector is decent enough and spreads the light evenly. My ballast is a wall wart so it uses up two receptacles. My particular unit (ten years old) has a conventional transformer type ballast and has given no trouble. Since I haven't received the new unit yet I can't say whether they have switched to an electronic version or not. There's very little to go wrong with a transformer ballast. Unfortunately the electronic units tend to fail more often.

I think it is a good omen that this is the exact same model that I purchased all those years ago right down to the red plastic caps on the arm tension adjusters. I plan to buy another one and hope for another ten years of use.

But old tony above is right about the looks. If you're not seriously into a retro utility style or if you have a spouse who is even slightly into decor - look elsewhere.

But to answer tony's other question: Why would anyone want this? This review is my answer. It's an inexpensive, well designed, sturdy, very useful source of fluorescent light that can be directed just about anywhere that costs about $13 a year to run nonstop. And, having had and heavily used one for ten years (date code on unit is 4/99) I ought to know.

Product Review: Good, functional lamp
Summary: 4 Stars

This lamp has a solid, heavy base. Its transformer wall wart can take up more than one spot on an power strip, this is par for the course. The lamp was sagging until I remembered to attach the springs of the upper arm, which arrive unattached (it took me 10 seconds). Satisfied, recommends that item.

Product Review: Huge a lamp
Summary: 5 Stars

It's very good a lamp.When I open a box,first think was does huge,but now I like it.

Product Review: Perhaps, it is not a very good Desk Lamp, but...
Summary: 4 Stars

Perhaps, it is not a very good Desk Lamp, but this lamp much better than 85% Desk Lamps you can find in store like Target, Office/Home Depot, etc.

Product Review: this is not a good lamp to buy
Summary: 5 Stars

why would anybody buy this lamp. This is a ugly lamp. This is not a lamp I want to have. Maybe this is a good lamp for some people but not for old tony.
