Product Reviews of Swiffer Wet Jet Starter Kit

Product Review: I Need A Twelve Step Program!
Summary: 5 Stars

Okay, I admit it: I'm addicted to Swiffer products. I own just about everything they've come out with and am pretty darned happy with them. This item, the Swiffer Wet Jet, is my hardwood-floor-saviour ...but not without some issues.

First is that hardwood floors are a bit of a pain to keep up. They show dirt, grime and streaks readily, so you have to be willing to sweep, re-sweep, and mop on a fairly regular basis. If your floors are really dirty, then you'll be going through Wet Jet replacement pads quickly (something I've learned). The pads are great for what they are but once they get any significant amount of dirt on them, they rapidly become useless. They will streak your floors mercilessly and you'll scream in dismay at how terrible they look. Do not fret. What you need to do is sweep (I use a Swiffer Max Sweeper) ...and sweep well. What I do next is use the Swiffer Vacuum Sweeper (yes, I double-sweep ...I told you I was addicted!). Then, if the floor looks free of debri, I pull out the Wet Jet.

Now I need to get the floor wet. Really wet. So I put down a good layer of the solution by holding down the spray button for about 3 seconds. I start mopping. And I don't mean just lazily spreading the solution around on the floor. I get my back into it. Scrub. Scrub. I go over trouble-looking areas two or three times. I scrub some more. If my floors were really dirty, I change out the pad frequently to prevent streaking. After I've finished, I don't walk on the wet floor. I let it evaporate. The smell of various solutions is nice and not overly strong (at least it wasn't for me).

After the floor has completely finished drying, I look at the floor from different angles. See streaking? That's where the pad got too dirty and couldn't pick up the grime so I just pushed it around on the floor. I re-mop the trouble spots using the Wet Jet. And scrub. Scrub hard. Now I look again. I don't see any streaking or grime.

Mopping needs will depend on how much dirt is tracked into your home, so if you've got a high volume walk-in area, it'll need Swiffering more frequently than you might like. But I don't mind it. Like I said, I'm addicted.

Product Review: The Easy Way To Mop
Summary: 5 Stars

Swiffer Wet Jet works well on tiles, linoleum, and hard wood floors. The huge downside to it is the cost of replacing the cleaning pads and cleaning solution.

However, there is a an alternative to the Swiffer Wet Jet Replacement Pads called Simplee Cleen Microfiber Refills. These replacement pads are washable and reusable.

And if you're willing to put in some elbow grease, there's even a way to refill the cleaning solution bottle (see Refilling The Bottle *).

Assembly
--------
The Swiffer Wet Jet requires some assembly (no tools needed). Once assembled, it cannot be dissembled.

The Swiffer Wet Jet requires 4 AA batteries to operate.

Functionality
-------------
The cleaning pads are very absorbent so they pick up even large spills very quickly. The pads also pick up dirt and grime very well when used with the Wet Jet cleaning solution.

The bottle containing the Wet Jet cleaning solution is designed to thwart any attempts to refill it. But if you're willing to put in some elbow grease, you can defeat the design and make the bottle refillable. See Refilling the Bottle *.

The cleaning head of the Wet Jet can be swiveled from side to side to angle it to clean around corners and hard-to-reach areas.

The button to dispense the cleaning solution is conveniently located on the handle.

There's a scrubbing strip (replaceable) on the side of the head for tackling stubborn dirt and grime.

Durability
----------
The shaft of the Swiffer is made of aluminum, which makes it very lightweight but strong. The Swiffer Wet Jet is very durable (I've had mine for well over a year).

* Refilling The Bottle
----------------------
There's a way to remove the cap of the Swiffer Wet Jet bottle to refill it with your favorite cleaner. Here's how:

- (1) Bring a pot of water to a boil.

- (2) Dip the cap (and ONLY the cap) of an EMPTY (used) Swiffer bottle into the hot water. Leave it in for about a minute.

- (3) Remove the cap from the hot water and IMMEDIATELY wrap a towel around the cap (to protect your hands from the heat) and twist the cap. It should come right off. Let the cap cool.

- (4) There are jagged teeth around the inside of the cap - these are responsible for "catching" the neck of the bottle to prevent the removal of the cap. With a pair of nail clippers, carefully snip these off.

- (5) Refill your Swiffer bottle with your favorite cleaner. Note: refilling the bottle with bleach or chemicals that leave a residue will cause the nozzle of the Swiffer Wet Jet to clog over time! Tap water is also a no-no as it leaves behind mineral deposits ("hard water").

Conclusion
----------
The Swiffer Wet Jet is a durable and easy-to-use mop. You can cut the cost of cleaning pads by getting the reusable/washable Simplee Cleen Microfiber Refills. If you follow the instructions on Refilling The Bottle * above, you can even save on the cleaning solution.

Product Review: Love it even though it has one drawback....
Summary: 5 Stars

...the drawback is this: you do have to vacuum the floor if there is a lot of loose debris, otherwise you are just pushing the debris around. the wet jet is great for spills, spots, scuffs, etc. i usually swiffer jet sweeper first. seems like more work, but it still beats the old mop & bucket or hands & knees. i would recommend this highly, but do note the drawback. it is easy to use, refill and maneuver. the refills are somewhat pricey. definitely not for those of you who have gone 'green'.

Product Review: Very Handy
Summary: 4 Stars

The swiffer wet jet is very handy to have around and it even promotes extra cleaning. You don't have to get out a bucket and all that, just the easily storeable wet jet and start cleaning.

Product Review: Better use that ol trusty mop!
Summary: 3 Stars

I decided to buy this product back in 07 or 08 when I went to my sister's home and seen she had one. It's an ok product; I hated how it left residue when cleaning. And I also realized that the Swiffer all in one are better for minor spills and light stains because there have been several occasions where I break sweats trying to remove stains from the ground. On the positive side, I truly had a 5 to 15 min workout with it, and finally it broke on me after a year using the product. I recently bought another one two weeks ago for immediate replacement. After I'm through with the wet jet, I sometimes feel that the floors should be shinny. However, it dries like right after 60 seconds. Let's just be honest, it's best to rely on the trusty old mop to get the job done follow by a floor glow/shine product.
