Product Review: Good when you want a quick once-over, but not for deep cleaning
Summary: 2 Stars

I'm going to start my review by saying that I have owned my Swiffer for years and years and years. I have children and a husband and a cat. I am a little bit of a clean freak, so I clean often. Everyone takes their shoes off at the front door, except for a few visitors. I used to LOVE my Swiffer. I was so sick of the old fashioned way of mopping. I also used to marvel at how the pad reminded me of a sanitary napkin or a diaper, how it seemed to wick away the dirt to the inside of the pad but leave the surface relatively clean until the thing was really full and sopping - to the point where when you pulled the pad off, it was heavy and you could see all the dirt soaked through to the underside.

Well, something has changed. For the past year, I have been extraordinarily unhappy with my Swiffer. It does not get my floor clean, or at least barely. It pushes around the dirt. After one mopping, I look at the pad, and the surface is covered with a layer of dirt/dust, but the inside is clean. From that point forward, all the mopping keeps sliding that dirt on the pad around the floor rather than sucking it into the pad. I finally will pull the pad off because it is so filthy, yet it is light and dry and there is no dirt visible through the underside. So I go through the pads frequently, much quicker than I used to. And yes, I always sweep or use my Shark floor sweeper or even my Dyson prior to the Swiffer to get up all the loose dirt/hair/crumbs etc. What a difference from my old beloved Swiffer experience!! I'm obviously assuming they have changed something about the pads.

I am so disappointed, I really would not recommend buying a Swiffer these days unless you just want it for very quick clean-ups between moppings. I've heard great things about steam cleaners, I'm going to invest in one. Wish me luck!!

Product Review: Excellent for my needs

I've been house-training a new puppy. She's much better now, but made all the typical puppy mistakes in the beginning.

The Swiffer Wet Jet is perfect. I put down a a few paper towels to soak up most of the liquid - and the Swiffer takes care of the rest. Cleans the spot and leaves it smelling fresh.

Also works well for light cleaning of the kitchen floor. If SCRUBBING many areas is required, I think you'll need something else.

Product Review: A real mop is cheaper and lasts longer
Summary: 1 Stars

"Swiffers" didn't exist just a few years ago, yet somehow we've kept our floors clean throughout the ages. This is just marketing garbage designed to hook you into a relatively cheap handle with overly expensive refills. No wonder P&G bought Gillette a few years back. They are big fans of raking their customers over the coals. Same thing there. Get a 20 year old safety razor and pay 20 cents for a refill rather than their exorbitant $3-$4 per cartridge.

Product Review: If you are REALLY strapped for time, the Wet Jet Mop is the way to go
Summary: 5 Stars

I finally broke down and bought this because I could no longer afford the time to use a traditional sponge mop and the time to dry the floors afterwards. So before I would

- sweep & vacuum the dust, dirt, fur, and hair
- mix a bucket with cleaning solution
- mop the floor
- run a floor drying fan to dry the floor
- rinse if needed
- run a floor drying fan to dry the floor
- repeat for each floor area
- put away the floor drying fan
- clean & rinse the sponge mop

So now, it's just
- bring out the Swiffer Wet Mop
- install a solution bottle & attach a pad
- sweep & vacuum the dust, dirt, fur, and hair from the floor (or use the Swiffer 2 in One Dry Sweeping pad)
- spray & mop as needed
- repeat for the next location
- remove the used pad and throw in the trash
- put away Swiffer Wet Jet mop

For me, the Swiffer is not overrated since I can now keep my floors clean and have the family members get back to walking on the floor sooner. Between this and the Swiffer 2 in One Procter & Gamble #30942 Swiffer Starter Kit (I have both), I like this mop system better because it leaves the floor less wet and therefore the floor is dry sooner. And the Swiffer Wet Mop pole seems sturdier compared with my Swiffer Two in One mop. One trick I learned is that the front of the Swiffer mop pad gets dirtier first. No problem, I just turn the pad around (switch the pad so the back of the pad now faces the front) and keep mopping. And while the included instruction says to push the button to swap cleaning solution bottles, it would be nice if the instructions included a diagram of where it is located (it is the white button located just above the battery door latch).

Of course, once the company stops making this product or my situation changes, I'll be going back to my sponge mop and cleaning solutions (I was using a liquid organic cleaner that is safe for kids and pets).

I can understand the company recommending against refilling their used solution bottles: they cannot guarantee that the solution I mix won't clog the mop or other wise harm the cleaning pad. But I'm sure that someone will try.

PROS:
If you use less solution (a little goes a long way) it leaves the floor less wet after mopping so the floor dries sooner. Foot traffic returns to normal sooner.
The cleaning solution has much lower odor than the solution for the Two in One pads.
No need to rinse the mop head with lots and lots of clean water to wash it.

CONS:
While the company owns the patent, you must use their cleaning solution.
The cleaning pads add to the trash.
The pole could be a bit longer.
Another product with planned obsolesce (how long will this product be made and the supplies made).

Product Review: I Need A Twelve Step Program!
Summary: 5 Stars

Okay, I admit it: I'm addicted to Swiffer products. I own just about everything they've come out with and am pretty darned happy with them. This item, the Swiffer Wet Jet, is my hardwood-floor-saviour ...but not without some issues.

First is that hardwood floors are a bit of a pain to keep up. They show dirt, grime and streaks readily, so you have to be willing to sweep, re-sweep, and mop on a fairly regular basis. If your floors are really dirty, then you'll be going through Wet Jet replacement pads quickly (something I've learned). The pads are great for what they are but once they get any significant amount of dirt on them, they rapidly become useless. They will streak your floors mercilessly and you'll scream in dismay at how terrible they look. Do not fret. What you need to do is sweep (I use a Swiffer Max Sweeper) ...and sweep well. What I do next is use the Swiffer Vacuum Sweeper (yes, I double-sweep ...I told you I was addicted!). Then, if the floor looks free of debri, I pull out the Wet Jet.

Now I need to get the floor wet. Really wet. So I put down a good layer of the solution by holding down the spray button for about 3 seconds. I start mopping. And I don't mean just lazily spreading the solution around on the floor. I get my back into it. Scrub. Scrub. I go over trouble-looking areas two or three times. I scrub some more. If my floors were really dirty, I change out the pad frequently to prevent streaking. After I've finished, I don't walk on the wet floor. I let it evaporate. The smell of various solutions is nice and not overly strong (at least it wasn't for me).

After the floor has completely finished drying, I look at the floor from different angles. See streaking? That's where the pad got too dirty and couldn't pick up the grime so I just pushed it around on the floor. I re-mop the trouble spots using the Wet Jet. And scrub. Scrub hard. Now I look again. I don't see any streaking or grime.

Mopping needs will depend on how much dirt is tracked into your home, so if you've got a high volume walk-in area, it'll need Swiffering more frequently than you might like. But I don't mind it. Like I said, I'm addicted.
