My 3 yr old son found it more of a torture than a regular bandage or band-aids. He was smart enough to pull-off the bandages I tied on his thumb but he was slowly getting used to it and was not taking it off until bedtime.
Instead of spending so much time and effort of putting a bandage on his thumb everytime he felt like "revolting", I thought I'd give thumb guard a try but its hard plastic feel instead of a soft cloth feel....makes it a strong punishment that they can never get used to...but would keep haunting them everytime they look at their thumb.
It is not recommended for kids smaller than 5 yrs of age because of the complicated "strings" hanging from it that make them so uncomfortable.

This product saved us from putting our child through having a dental cage cemented into his mouth (plus lots of money)! He stopped sucking his thumb on his own, but conscientiously sucked it while sleeping and there's no chart in the world that can help that. This product did. He loves to pick out the color, snap it closed and he even cuts it off with his safety scissors in the morning. Wonderful product.Product Review: Not worth the money!!

This product (the small) did not work for my dedicated 4 year old thumb sucker. I purchased two, one for each hand, as he is an equal opportunity sucker. We put these on tightly everyday. There were times that I thought that we would cut off his circulation to his hand it was so tight. he figured out how to slip his thumb out by stretching out the band during the night. We also spent a lot of time searching for this as he would hide at least one every day. In addition to being able to pull the thing off, he also chewed on it constantly giving it an oh so lovely smell when we would pull it off to clean it and change the band every night. I ordered this item for my 5 year-old daughter who has been a thumb-sucker her entire life (I even have a sonogram picture of her sucking her thumb!). We had tried rewards, punishments, bad-tasting polish, nothing worked. Until this device. She has not sucked her thumb now in about a week - with the true test being at night before she goes to sleep.
The pros - it's flexible and the child can do most things normally. It's not overly comfortable, but it's not horribly uncomfortable either. The straps adjust easily.
The Cons - my daughter figured out how to create suction on the device simply by pushing it down around the base of her thumb fairly quickly. I then made a modification to the device (which I am not going to list) and solved that problem immediately. The other thing I didn't like was it became discolored after only about 3 days of use. It started out clear and then turned a yellowish brown for seemingly no reason that could not be washed out - it's like the plastic itself was permeated. Plus, with normal wear and tear the top got a few cracks in it. So if you are looking for something that is going to look o.k. for a full month - this probably isn't it.
