Product Reviews of Stop Thumb Sucking with Thumb Guard Kit (Size Medium/Ages 5-6)Product Review: DId not work Summary: 1 Stars
My 4 year old son tried this for several weeks. He bit the top of the thumb guard and the salvia was trapped at the bottom of the device where he formed a bacterial infection on his thumb from continually being wet. Tried taping thumb with sports tape-did not work. Tried Thumb polish and 2 licks and wasn't too aweful. By age 7 he finally decided to stop all on his own.
Product Review: Definately worth the purchase Summary: 5 Stars
This product is just as good as the more expensive guards you'll see. The key is that your child has to express an interest in quitting. We did daily stickers, weekly awards. I advize that you keep it on as recommened for 3 weeks (mainly at night for my son), even if your child wants to try without it sooner. Yes, the child can wiggle it off, but if he really wants to quit, and you have motivators you can actually make it a thing for the child to be proud of if he doesn't remove it. (Plus you can reuse the band for longer use without reordering.) Definately worth the purchase if you way it against orthodontics later!
Product Review: Didn't work for my little thumbsucker... Summary: 2 Stars
We bought this very expensive product as a last ditch effort to break our 6-year-old's habit. No matter how tight (short of pinching her skin) I put it on, she manages to pull her thumb out to suck on it. She chews on it too. Other than being embarrased to wear it, this product has been completely ineffective for us.
Product Review: Easily Removed - Only works if child wants to stop Summary: 3 Stars
This product works great as reinforcement when your child WANTS to quit, and when they can be convinced (bribed) to leave it on. Because of the stretchy rubber, there is no way to get it tight enough that they can't pull the strap closures through each other and get them loose enough to get guard off if they really want to. It took my kid less than two minutes to figure this out. However, if you can come up with an incentive - a reward they will get if the guards are still on in the morning, then the Thumbguard can help them not to accidentally suck during the night, and can be a reminder during the day. My child nibbles on hers, though, and the rubber can be bitten and nibbled away to reveal the thumb after a few weeks. If you are forcing this on your child - don't waste your money. If they WANT to quit and agree they need help, this product can be a big reinforcement.
Product Review: Excellent Thumb Guard Summary: 5 Stars
I was a little skeptical about this product since a lot of reviews said "your child has to want to quit". My 6yr old did NOT want to quit sucking his thumb. We'd tried every bribe under the sun, this guard was the last resort. It worked great. The first night was hard, he cried himself to sleep and I even caught him with the whole thing in his mouth while he was sleeping, but after that first night he was fine. He's a very active 6yr old boy, this hasn't hindered his play at all. He can do everything like normal. Lucky for us it's his left thumb and he's right handed (not sure how that would go if he had to write with that hand). He doesn't even really notice it's on most of the time, no kids have bothered him about it. He's had it on almost 3 weeks now, we're going to stop wearing it in a few days. My husband and I both think after a few days of wearing it the habit was broken. I just really want to be sure before we take it off for good. The paperwork and video it came with recommended 4 weeks at least. I feel confident when we take it off at 3 weeks he will not suck his thumb anymore. Great great product! Wish we had done it a long time ago. Oh, and it fit true to size. I orderd the medium for 5-6 year old and it is perfect.
