Product Reviews of Simply Gargle Salt Water Rinse, 0.4-Ounce Ampules in 12-Count Boxes pack of 3

Product Review: Promise of portability is illusory
Summary: 2 Stars

The salt water portion of the mixture works as promised. The overall product has a musky, sage-like aftertaste. I felt no discernible "boost" from the various additional additives contained in the product. As far as I'm concerned, a plain salt water rinse works just as well as this product.

I do believe the manufacturers have created this product to fulfill a "need"- a "need" that didn't exist until the manufacturers created the product!

The tab containing the product is hard to open. This makes some sense, as you wouldn't want have the rinse easily spill out into whatever you're carrying it in. (pocket, suitcase, handbag, etc.)

I needed a scissor to open the tab, however, after I nearly ingested the tab while trying to rip the tab off with my teeth. (Twisting the tab took me nearly 3 minutes before it worked. I could make a salt water rinse myself in that amount of time.)

Using a scissor defeats the whole purpose of carrying around a "ready to rinse" product. (Do you have a scissor with you when you're on the go?) Perhaps I wasn't opening the tab properly, but there were no instructions for me to follow concerning the specific method of opening the tab.

The concept of portability is promising (indeed, it accounts for 50% of my rating) but illusory. Bring your swiss army knife along with you to hack the tab open!

I got this as a gift and was intrigued that someone could improve on the old standby of gargling with salt water. The instructions on the soft plastic cigarette-lighter sized disposable container reads: "Twist-off tab, Gargle in back of throat for 15-30 seconds and spit out". The ingredients list is: vitamin c, grape seed extract, rosemary extract, rose hips extract, witch hazel extract, sage extract. I assume water and some sort of salt as well.

Unfortunately what they don't include on the ingredients list is "bad taste". It tastes like the plastic container it comes in - not just a little, but it almost made me gag the chemical plastic taste was so bad. This is not surprising, salt water is one of the most caustic substances there is, and this is very salty water in a (thick) soft plastic packet.

Most of the herbs listed in the ingredients list would not remain potent in a bath of strong salt water, just as not much survives in the Dead Sea. Overall I think this seems like a clever idea, the mobility of the packaging might be good while traveling, but I think a small flask made at home with table salt would taste a lot better and be a lot cheaper.

There have been times when dentists have recomended rinsing with salt water. I'm not a dentist but there is a good use for this product and it is very convenient. If you are in need of this, I would consider buying this item.

Product Review: Simple salt water will be a better choice

In general, I strongly advocate warm salt water for oral hygene. So, I sampled this product. I am not pleased with the additional (unnecessary) ingredients added to simple salt water, as they created an unwanted flavor and taste. I really do not know if they have any value add in terms of health and hygene. The sachet is not easy to open. I feel sad that so much of plastic waste is generated for such a simple purpose. I wish the company used bio-degradable packaging. I am not ready to pay a lot of money for such a simple solution and little convenience. I would personally use simple, warm salt water.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Last fall I came down a chain of colds and irritated throats. Every time my system seemed to settle down, I woke up with a throat like sandpaper. So when I was given a choice last October to preview a new, portable salt water rinse, I gave it a shot.

Right off the bat, Simply Gargle's rinse is no substitute for a proper cough drop. Since it lacks the ability to coat the throat, irritation returns within a couple hours. However, cough drops can't rinse irritants out either, and that's where these ampules came in handy.

Small and light enough to be carried in a pocket, and with a sturdy vinyl construction, these ampules are nevertheless too big to carry in quantity. I found the best thing to do was simply to carry one at a time with a couple drops. At the first sign of irritation, twist off the tab, squirt it all into your mouth, and gargle for about 10 to 15 seconds at a time, for about 30 to 40 seconds. This is sufficent to clear out even a lot of crap, sustaining me for at least one hour before returning home or breaking out the cough drops.

On this note, I did find it difficult at times to twist off the tabs--to the point of using scissors at least twice. It also might take a little bit of practice to get used to administering all 0.4 ounces without dribbling or gagging; if available, I would use a small cup.

Finally, this stuff is throat wash, not mouth wash. But if you need to clear up your breath in a pinch, or somebody in your life is getting tired of mint-flavored kisses, these are sure better than nothing. I doubt the health benefits of any of the herbs listed in Simply Gargle's formula, but I'll take them over onion breath anyday.
