Short: It works, no residue or left-behind dirt, no scent in the air.
I've been slowly trying to replace my household cleaners with 7th-Gen products. I had switched the detergent I use for the dishwasher's pre-wash pocket to a natural one, but the main-wash is harder to get right (natural detergents typically break down too quickly at high temps), and after some bad episodes with an early Ecover product that left everything dirty, I was hesitant. But these "pacs" get it right.
I ran a couple of test loads: normal water, a mix of dirty dishes that have sat a few days and "fresh" ones, dishes arranged my usual way (tightly packed but correctly placed), my dishwasher heats water to the recommended temperature, and using the shortest wash cycle ("light/china").
I tried one load with, and one load without, a pre-wash detergent (the directions say to use just one pac in the "main" compartment, I was curious if I noticed any difference).
In both cases, everything came out clean! Just as clean as my usual combo of 7thGen gel (pre-wash) and Cascade Complete (main-wash). So one-pac-per-load from now on!
And here's the big plus: There's no lingering chemical scent in the air after use, and you're not flushing phosphates down the drain. That means no VOCs in the air to damage your lungs (my kitchen positively reeks after using Cascade Complete) and less chemicals to damage the local watershed.
All natural ingredients, recycled/recyclable/degradable packaging, good for you, good for the environment-- AND it works well! what's not to like? Highly recommended.

Having used Seventh Generation laundry detergent before (and being very pleased with the results) I thought this might be just as good. Additionally, the "free & clear" product sounded like a good idea - who wants unnecessary chemicals? The problem is that a stale odor is left behind. It's possible that it's in my dishwasher, although we never noticed it before. But for us the unscented variety was definitely disappointing. We usually use the Cascade or Electrasol products, and this one seems to clean just as well. I noticed no slimy film left behind or rusting of my silverware like some others have reported. Seventh Generation's automatic dishwasher detergent pacs are an ingenious solution to getting your dishes sparkling clean using a product that is safe for you, your family and the earth.
The box is made from 100% recycled paper. The tabs are individually encased in biodegradable PVA and packaged together in a resealable PVA pouch. All you do is unseal the pouch and put the tab in the dishwasher dispenser cup and run the machine as you normally do. The PVA around the tab dissolves, releasing the cleaning concentrate. A combination of water softeners, protection agents, alkalinity builders and anti-spotting agents prove to be remarkably effective. The first time I used the product, I was thoroughly impressed with the spotless drinking glasses and squeaky-clean dishes that were produced. I don't think I have ever had a cleaner result!
I must confess that I have previously used conventional detergents that use harsh chemicals ingredients. The results have always been mixed: spotty glasses, sticky residues, and undissolved cleaning 'crystals' seemed to be persistent problems that I somehow had to get used to. Perhaps I should have known this all along, but using a completely biodegradable product that is free of dyes, fragrances, masking agents and other unnatural materials has proven to be a far better choice for me.
I highly recommend this product to everyone!

After reading the mixed reviews of this product, I was very eager to try it. We have a Maytag Dishwasher that is about 10 years old, very hard water, and a Culligan water softener. Although we have a water softener, we have some hard water stains in the dishwasher that need to be cleaned occasionally. After using Seventh Generation I was surprised to find my dishwasher looked whiter inside.
Since we only run our dishwasher every 2 or 3 days, I always rinse my dishes and never have a problem with dishes not coming clean. I found that Seventh Generation cleaned my dishes as well as Cascade. Some reviewers mentioned that this product had a bad smell, but my dishwasher smelled great when I opened it, and there was no residue left in my dishwasher as some reviewers mentioned. I do agree that this product is a little pricey.
My question with this product is about this statement on the box: "Silver, aluminum and stainless steel should be washed in separate loades to avoid discoloration." This simply would not work for me and sounds a little ridiculous when you think about it. I washed my ever day stainless steel tableware and did not notice any discoloration but maybe continued use could be a problem.

I have six boxes of this I won't use because I need to prewash all of my dishes before using this product. Otherwise, they don't come out clean, even if the food is fresh. The ecover ones work a lot better.
