For many men, shaving is a necessary chore which we attempt to minimize time-wise; unfortunately, rushing through sometimes ends up taking more time, dealing with cuts or razor burn. For the past five years, I've been mostly using the Braun 8595 shaver. It has decent performance although not as good as a blade. I have not tried a rotary shaver before this one.
The first thing I noticed is how light the R-5130 is compared to the 8595. It is mostly plastic and might not survive unplanned visits to the bathroom floor. The top pops open a little too easily. The design is OK and fits comfortably in my hand. The rechargeable NiMH battery has decent capacity and I like how it allows use while charging and also the quick charge mode. The LED battery indicator on the R-5130 is fine and all that is really necessary. I've found the 8595's LCD a little overbearing and unnecessary.
As far as shaving performance, the R-5130 does not shave as close as the 8595. Perhaps I am not used to the rotary design yet but there is a difference for me. The trimmer on the R-5130 is also somewhat awkward to use compared to the 8595. The R-5130 is washable but it has a lot of nooks and crannies and scrubbing under water is messy and inconvenient. The 8595 has superior cleaning: just drop it in the holder and go. The only negative is the cost for cleaning cartridges. As far as cutters, the 8595 claims an 18 month life versus the R-5130's 12 months. Finally, I used a sound pressure level meter and the 8595 is significantly quieter: ~70dB versus ~80dB for the R-5130. I thought the rotary design would result in a quieter shaver but that is apparently not true.
