Product Reviews of Ready Strip Deluxe KitProduct Review: Ready Strip varnish & paint remover Summary: 4 Stars
Product works well to remove old varnish. The remover must be applied in a thick heavy coat. This could become expensive when stripping large items. I found it to be very messy to use but leftover product is easy to remove. All in all not bad.
Product Review: Yes it removes paint....but not at all like they say Summary: 2 Stars
I have seen this product around online and informercials for years. Finally when I had came across a large paint removal project in a new house of course I thought of Ready Strip. Firstly the product does in fact smell, though I will say not like other strippers. It smells like a well used rodent cage.
The instructions tell you not to apply like paint but like "cake icing", which is surprisingly hard to do with something that goes on like milk. Nothing like the generously slathered pastelike stripper in the ads. After applying a few coats it was still not very thick and couldn't be applied again for fear of the product pooling on the floor instead of the woodwork. After letting the stripper sit on the wood overnight it was a sort of sickly pale green instead of the expected "eggshell" color but seemed to have pulled up paint as it could be seen puckering underneath. The ready strip had become hard as the original paint, an impentitrable shell sealing in all layers. We misted the area with the finishing spray as the instructions said may be needed to moisten the "skin" that could form on the stripper. The area actually needed to be almost continually soaked to allow progress. Using the supplied "proffesional scraper" to start almost damaged the wood, the design didn't seem to work for me except at extreme angles and only for an inch or so. So breaking out the good old hardware store scraper... a small test area was removed. Only about two layers came up with the stripper leaving the whole proccess to be repeated for days on end. By this time all finishing spray is exhausted and so are all arms. In the future I shall investigate other options and leave the ready strip where it is.
