Product Reviews of Rayovac Rechargeable NiMH Batteries, AAA-size, 4-count Carded Pack (Pack of 2)

Product Review: Half price batteries vs. anywhere else
Summary: 5 Stars

Half price batteries vs. anywhere else, including even Walmart.

This is standard brand, have been using them since then, and still working great.

Good purchase.

Product Review: Lower price + SAME capacity = Good value
Summary: 4 Stars

The latest family of Rayovac rechargeable NiMH batteries are all missing one thing: the capacity rating. Previously, you can see the charge capacity (such as '800mAh') marked on every package and also on each cell. But newer Rayovac rechargeable NiMH cells are just grouped into three classes ('Everyday-Use', 'High-Energy' and 'Hybrid') with vague claims such as 'Up to 115 photos' printed on their packages.

Of course, those claims make very little sense to us, because Rayovac never tell us which camera was used, and under what test conditions were those photos taken. By the way, how many digital cameras are powered by AAA cells?

After a lot of searching, I was able to find the spec sheet for those cells from rayovacindustrial dot com:

- NM724-4OP 'Everyday-Use' AAA, 'Up to 115 photos': capacity=800mAh
- NM724-4B 'High-Energy' AAA, 'Up to 115 photos': capacity=800mAh
- LD724-4A 'Hybrid' AAA, 'Up to 135 photos': capacity=800mAh

The item offered here is the NM724-4OP (the 'OP' stands for 'Opening Product'). But here's the kicker: it has exactly the same capacity rating as the 'High Energy' and 'Hybrid' AAA cells. Given that the OP-series is available at the lowest price, it is actually a good value. Just remember that it does not offer the low-self-discharge characteristic like the Hybrid.

[Update Sep 4, 2010]
As if the offerings above is not confusing enough, Rayovac has now discontinued the 'Hybrid' series, and replaced it with another two types:

- LD724-4OP 'Pre-Charged': capacity=650mAh
- PL724-4 'Platinum Pre-Charged': capacity=800mAh

Product Review: Measured Capacity Exceeds Spec
Summary: 4 Stars

Another review indicates the capacity for these (NM724-4OP) is 800 mAh. I routinely run new batteries through the conditioning phase of my La Crosse Technology BC-9009 AlphaPower Battery Charger. It is a good idea to do this, even for NiMh type batteries. Measured capacity averaged:

Before conditioning = 830 mAh
After conditioning = 870 mAh.

In my experience, rechargeable battery capacities are usually lower than their ratings (often more than 10%), but I was very pleased to see that these actually exceed their rating. I'm happy with the performance of these for electronics that are regularly used. If your device is only used intermittently, you should look at the new hybrid rechargeables that have less of a self-discharge rate (but cost more, of course): Sanyo Eneloop AAA NiMH Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries (4 Pack)

Product Review: Work Great!
Summary: 4 Stars

Arrived on time and work great! I love knowing that I will no longer be tossing batteries into the environment every few weeks.
