Product Reviews of Rabbit Air BioGS AC Charcoal filter for models SPA-421A and SPA-582AProduct Review: Shipped Just Fine Summary: 5 Stars
I have two rabbit air purifiers, one downstairs and one upstairs so when I needed to buy a replacement charcoal filter I ordered online. There really isn't any place within 50 miles of me where I can go shop for one, so this was really my only option and I had no problem.
Honestly, I've had more problems with my water filters getting charcoal everywhere. This, despite ground shipping, seemed to do fine for me.
Product Review: Shipped fine. Works great. Summary: 5 Stars
This item was a direct OEM replacement to the filter that came with my unit. My original had a plastic frame while this one has an aluminum one. They also do not have the honeycomb cell shapes (for the charcoal) anymore.
Aside from the obvious shipping materials (which were ample): The packaging for this product is minimal: only a purple bag around it. No pointless extra box or other materials you just end up throwing away. The purple bag is "PE rated for recycling.
My last filter lasted 3 years, which is the same duration they suggested. How I knew it was time to change out the filter was that the unit stopped clearing odors (i.e. cooking, cats) from the room.
I did, however, wash the filter every month or so with Ivory dish soap and warm water.
Product Review: These things don't ship well. DIY Skills needed! Summary: 2 Stars
I've had my Rabbit Air filter for a long time. When I first installed the original filter, I had a problem where the frame opened just a bit and let some carbon escape. Not a big deal. It was just a small amount and I snapped the frame together. When I read a review saying that the frames were now aluminum, well they must have fixed the problem! Time to order!
Sadly, it looks like I've got the "New and improved" plastic frame. My replacement frame came with sound effects! I could make music with it now! Think of a giant carbon filter maraca. You can see some of the pictures I uploaded. The frame split in one corner and released a lot of the mouse poop looking carbon.
This isn't the end of the world though. With a bit of effort, you can herd the poop back into the plastic frame cells and snap the frame together again. The frame appears to have melted plastic "spot welds" to keep it together, and obviously one of these failed in mine. Without that plastic weld, the snaps for the corner popped open and released the hounds.
A DIY fix. Some herding. A bit of tape. But I shouldn't have to do this. I'm sure others would have returned it and given them 1 star. I did buy it from amazon, but it was sold/shipped from Rabbit Air. I hope they read this. Go back to the aluminum style!
Product Review: Why this is an excellent air filter Summary: 5 Stars
I have worked in the filtration industry. Even got a patent for one design. I am also very picky about home air filters. I have been disappointed by so many brands and designs. Either they are ineffective, noisy, gimmicky, expensive to maintain, or any combo of these. I bought my Rabbit Air two years ago. So this is not a one week review. This review will focus on the carbon filter. Did I say carbon? Yes. It is not charcoal. Charcoal is what you use in a BBQ grill. This filter contains activated carbon (AC). AC is made from wood char or coal, in a kiln. The heating process burns off the organics and leaves a black porous structure called activated carbon. The surface area of the carbon can bind and hold many organic chemicals that are in the air. That is how it works. The AC captures the stinky stuff as the air is pulled through the filter. The "Charcoal" filter is protected behind the the other paper air filter. This keeps the dust particles from clogging up the surfaces of the AC. The filter frame was aluminum on my original filter. The new replacement is all plastic. I believe I can take the aluminum frame apart and refill the filter myself-I have not tried yet. The all-plastic replacement filter arrived in a sealed bag. No damage, nothing wrong at all.How long does the "Charcoal" filter really last? It depends on how polluted your air really is. If you are a smoker I suggest the filter is exhausted after one or two months. It is very difficult to scientifically provide a replacement date due to so many uncontrollable factors such as the existing air quality in your home. I let mine go for two years. I only use the filter in the winter months, when the windows are closed. Overall-this is a well-made and designed AC air filter. Best I have seen in any consumer filter.
Product Review: not practical as an online purchase Summary: 1 Stars
I thought i'd purchase one spare filter for my air purifier as it helps with allergies.
This item consists of several small chambers connected to each other, each filled with small granules of activated carbon. Both surfaces of the filter are composed of a plastic mesh to let the air in and out.
Sadly, i received the filter with all the activated carbon granules loose in the bottom of the filter encasing rendering it useless. Obviously this filter was not meant for shipping. If you must buy it its not a good deal online.
