I don't know how they work, exactly but they DO work! I've had them in the tank for 2 winters now and they definitely help the filters stay cleaner and last longer and there is no white bulid-up on the tank EVER!
They are well worth the money--I know they look funny but believe me, they work!

ProTec Cleaning Cartridge does exactly what it says. Actually, it works even longer. My humidifier stopped working and I let it sit for over a week on two different occasions till I could get around to emptying. When I did clean it, the water was not slimy at all nor was the filter. Before I purchased this, my water had to be changed daily or slime and scaling would build up horribly. It also turned the filter a horrible yellow. It still turns it a little yellow, but nothing like before. We have well water. It's also a time saver, cause I don't have to empty it and clean it every day. I'm not a slave to the humidifier anymore! Definately worth it!Product Review: Buy Elsewhere for under $5.

These are good if you don't want to add 1/8 tsp. bleach every few fill-ups. I've bought two of these tank drop-in "cleaners", and yes it does prevent microbes, bacteria and mildew from ruining your humidifier. It also makes your filter last a lot longer. In the instructions it says it prevents the buildup of mineral deposits by attracting them to the cartridge rather than clogging your humidifier. This particular cartridge can be used in tanks up to 2 gallons in size and used for up to 30 days. If you don't use your humidifier that much, you can take it out and let it dry, but only for a total of 30 days. Let's say you only use the cartridge for a week, well then just take it out and let it dry and you got 23 more days of use out of it, however you want to use it. One week on, one week off whatever works for you, but like I said above only for a total of 30 days.
