It's very shiny, fluffy, and like the other reviews on a different product, it does not mix well in water when trying to stir in with a spoon (it floats on top). It didn't mix well in soy milk either. I have not tried it with a blender. It also has yucky bitter taste somewhat like lysine, but not as strong.
The lack of mixing, shiny texture, and odd bitterness all indicates it's pure leucine and if you have a product that does not exhibit all three, then maybe you have something that is not the pure chemical.
This amino acid triggers the mTOR signaling pathway that tells muscle cells to start building more muscle if there is enough other amino acids available in the bloodstream and if you are within the 4 hour window after 3 good sets of resistance training. My theory is that the body uses leucine as the signal for more muscle building (about 65% of the signal) because it exists more in animal meat than plant matter. Hunter animals that live year-round requires more muscle in the hunter than in the gatherer/gardener. So the resistance training is the hunting phase that expects a big payoff in protein food loaded with leucine immediately after the hunt. This doesn't explain why a large amount of carbs immediately afterwards helps prevent muscle catabolism.
One recent study shows hourly large doses of whey protein (0.4 g/kg/hr) might have enough leucine, because whey is 7% to 10% leucine. Another study shows a 16% benefit from leucine at 0.1 g/kg/hr (30 g over 4 hours for a 170 pound person). So leucine has some benefit, but the most most important thing is to spread out enough whey and nearly twice as many carbs during the 4 hours after 3 good sets of each exercise in a workout. Any excess carbs or protein over what is needed is turned into fat. One dosing scheduling of food after training is carbs at 0.8 g/kg/hr and whey at 0.4 g/kg/hr, but I do 30% less since I'm not well trained and in my 40s and I want to reduce belly fat as much as increase muscle. I can reduce belly fat 1 mm per day like this. The point seems to be to consume about 50% of your daily calories after a good workout so that the calories go to muscle instead of fat. If you don't eat immediately afterwards, your body thinks you're in starvation and that it did not benefit from the use of muscles so it will increase fat stores rather than building muscle that only burns calories. Your body wants to see an immediate reward from using the muscles before it builds more.
