Product Reviews of Philips Sonicare HX3351/02 Xtreme Battery Operated ToothbrushProduct Review: Half the cost, but more convenient than a regular Sonicare Summary: 5 Stars
Pros: half the cost of a Sonicare w/charger, less bulky
Cons: None so far
First of all, I should state that I have owned this product for over a year, and I am still giving it five stars.
Here's why: I had a Sonicare Advance for about three years and it worked well during that time, but at the end of those three years I had to keep it in the charger at all times or it would die in the middle of brushing. I was sick of lugging around the bulky charger any time I traveled, so when I saw the AA-battery model at Target for $40 I scooped it up.
Now instead of having to rely on an internal battery and a charger, I just keep four rechargeable AAs that I swap out when one pair dies. This isn't something I have to do very often--a pair of AAs lasts about a month (that's with two two-minute brushings a day). I have also not had any water damage, so the brush still works as great as my old Sonicare ever did. I do try not to get water on the brush and dry the entire unit whenever I finish using it. In addition, I take it apart once every two or three months and swab the O-ring with alcohol to keep it clean. This seems to be all of the maintenance needed to keep it in top condition.
So, if you want a good Sonicare brush that takes up less space and is easier to travel with, I highly recommend this model. I recommend cleaning it once in a while and trying to keep water out of the insides. I acknowledge this might not help if you get a bad unit (as many reviewers seem to have gotten), but mine has been great and I figure it can't hurt!
UPDATE: I have now owned it for a year-and-a-half and it still goes a month on two AA rechargeables. Even though I stopped doing the maintenance described above it's still working like new.
Product Review: Have purchase a half dozen! Summary: 5 Stars
Actually, I just purchased four more Sonicare toothbrushes for my adult children and their mates as gifts. My husband and I have used ours for years and love them.I like the battery powered model as I can stash in a drawer when not in use. Love walking around the house -- usually checking email -- while brushing my teeth. A good email will sometimes inspire me to go 2-3 rounds with the tooth brush.Smile.
Product Review: High-Efficiency Oral Hygiene Summary: 5 Stars
The vibrating is unpleasant at first, but you get used to it. And you grow to appreciate the intense feeling because you know that it is precisely that motion that makes your teeth so damn clean.
This is an excellent toothbrush. It's the cheapest of the adult brushes in the sonicare line and sonicare is way better than any other electric toothbrush. And any electric toothbrush is way better than a manual toothbrush. Electric toothbrushes are not about being lazy, they're about being time-and-energy efficient when cleaning your teeth. Example: 2 minutes with a sonicare brush makes your mouth around 75% cleaner than 2 minutes with a manual brush. Maybe 25% cleaner than 2 minutes with a different electric toothbrush that isn't sonicare.
And you honestly don't need to spend $100 or $200 on one of the more expensive brushes in the Sonicare line either, since this does the same work for less money. It uses 2 AA batteries, and I use rechargeable ones, which makes it more convenient than charging the brush every night. I just swap my one pair of rechargeable AA's for my other pair when I need to, and so it is easier to travel with the brush.
The sonicare technology was recommended by my dentist, and I found it here on Amazon for cheaper than what the dentist was selling it for, with the buy-from-dentist rebate INCLUDED. You could always win an eBay auction and possibly get one for cheaper than this, but I was too impatient to wait, and most auctions I saw ended around $30 anyway.
Did I mention that I love my Sonicare Xtreme?
Allow me to make an above point clear: If you want to spend $100-$200 on a toothbrush, then just buy 3 to 6 Sonicare Xtremes, and then give them to your family and friends. The Sonicare Xtreme uses the same brush heads as ALL THE OTHER SONICARE E-SERIES BRUSHES. These brushes are the top of the line, and the Xtreme has the exact same essential functions as the rest of the Sonicare family does, except for $100-$150 less. I recommend you don't waste your money on a more expensive brush just because it is more expensive.
Do some more research and see that Sonicare brushes are the best for consumer oral hygiene. Then do more research and see that the Sonicare Xtreme has all the necessary features that the other Sonicare brushes have. Then buy it, and keep your teeth for longer. You and all the people who have to look at your teeth or smell your breath in your life will be happy you did.
Product Review: I counted the days I was without it... Summary: 4 Stars
My original Sonicare died after about 2 years. My wife spent [...] bucks on it and needless to say I was not happy to see it go. You would think a $[...] toothbrush would last pretty much forever... Anyway, I replaced it with this much cheaper model and am very pleased so far. In addition to being a lot less expensive it has a much simplified design which should last longer, and has a user replaceable battery.
On the negative side, it seems to chew through batteries. In fact I actually reported the first one Amazon shipped as defective as it stopped working after 5 days. Turns out the batteries I swapped were dead too and there was nothing wrong with the toothbrush after all. My bad. The fresh batteries I installed only lasted maybe 3 weeks or so. I'm going to use rechargeables from now on, but just be forewarned that this thing gobbles batteries.
But in terms of the operation of the toothbrush I love it. In the short time I had to use a regular toothbrush waiting for this to arrive I felt like I had trench mouth. No matter how long or how vigorously I would brush my teeth just never felt clean, and by 10AM if felt like I hadn't brushed in days. The commercial is a cliche but it's true - Sonicare makes you feel like you just walked out of the dentist office.
Product Review: I really like it! Summary: 5 Stars
It's the first electric I ever owned and I really like it. I like the timed brushing. I feel like I am doing something right everytime I use it. Why did I wait so long? Batteries last forever and I did not see any possibility of any of the problems I read about with the contacts getting wet and shorting out. I Don't know how this would even be possible! A GOOD BUY!
