I had to admit when I first held this little cordless Norelco in my hand I had to laugh a little bit. Surely there's no way it could smoothly plow through my thick hair! To my surprise, however, it ripped right through without a single cough or fit. I was also surprised to discover I could cut my own hair pretty well with it! I've been paying Pro Cuts $15 a month for years just for them to give my hair a buzz, and now I don't think I'll need them ever again!
The 180-degree turning feature is a nice addition to the product, though I found I did most of my clipping at the standard upright position, there were a few times where I needed to go in from the side. The attachments work well, except for the Precision Trimmer which I found wasn't able to trim away the annoying hairs that grow down my neck at all. I had to use my other shaver for that. It did work nicely for that delicate hair line above the ears, though.
I do admit, that as a first time self hair cutter I had my friend look at it too to make sure I didn't miss a few spots - which, of course, I did - but again surprisingly few. With a couple more trims I'll no doubt become a pro with it.
So.. let's do the math. $15 hair cuts once a month (sometimes more) and this costs $40... hmm, sounds like it'll pay for itself in no time! Now I admit I've just started using it so I can't comment on the life span, but with the self-sharpening blades it seems like it should last a long time and provide many great cuts before pooping out. Definitely worth trying!

There are many positives with this new Norelco Hair Clipper. It is cordless- the best feature! A single attachment is needed as opposed to four different attachments with other razors. Motor noise is reduced. Also the blades need no oiling.
Some negatives- A battery indicator would be nice. A case or bag would be handy when traveling. A quicker charge would also be
a good addition. (1-2 hours vs. the current 8 hrs.)
Overall, I am very pleased with the Norelco 5100. The overall smoother cut paired with a quieter motor, fewer attachments to complete the job, and being cordless has me moving my currently used clippers to a box in the garage.

I ordered this trimmer mainly because I'm Spanish and my thick mop of hair tends to grow quickly. I like my hair neat and trim and going to the barber every 2 weeks is expensive and time consuming.
I'm no expert at cutting hair I'll admit - especially my own. But my intentions were to simply keep the side of my hair and around my ears and neck in control until my regular barber visit. The Philips Norelco QC5170 is perfect for the job I had in mind and has performed flawlessly so far.
So I'll start with what I like. The QC5170 is very lightweight which is helpful in preventing hand/wrist fatigue. The head of the unit can articulate 90 degrees in either direction for hard to reach areas. The blades are supposedly self-sharpening and don't require oil or a lot of user attention. The unit also comes with a built-in rechargeable battery and charging cable. Not having to fumble around with a cord is a fantastic feature and makes clipping your own hair much easier!
There are 2 reasons why I didn't give this unit a 5-star rating. First, the unit doesn't come with a case. That means all the attachments and cord are sitting in a bathroom drawer and unorganized. Second, I really wish this unit had a built-in vacuum. I've been using this unit for about the last 2 months and recently borrowed a friends Philiphs Noreclo with a built-in vacuum and it was great not creating a huge mess every time I cut my hair.
Overall though it's a very nice clipper for the price. Recommended.
Product Review: Defective Parts

Mine was not a good one... Granted, we all know that there can be some defective products from the manufacturing process even if perfectly designed. But in my case, the rotating part of the clipper does not fit into the main body of the product, which is a sign of design defect. Immediately returned. Not a good one!
