Product Reviews of Philips Norelco 9160XL SmartTouch-XL Men's ShaverProduct Review: Wet Shaving is Key to Enjoying this Shaver Summary: 5 StarsI bought this razor and was very disappointed compared to the Braun (that I had used previously) or a wet shave with a blade. I was hoping for better results based on the reviews, but ended up agreeing with the reviews that panned this shaver. I put the shaver aside for a while and went back to wet shaving with a blade. THEN, I was told to try a wet shave with it -- I tried it again and what a difference this made!! The result was just as good as a blade shave, and I can wet shave with this faster than I can with a blade -- this is important to me as I want to minimize the time I spend shaving. And I don't need to skip days to build stubble for a better shave. If I'm using the sink rather than shaving in the shower, all I need to do is frequently wet the head of the shaver in warm running water and continue shaving.
There were many good reviews that mention wet shaving when I bought the shaver and perhaps many people are familiar with this, but none seemed emphatic about the huge difference between wet shaving and dry shaving with this electric razor. There are reviews that pan the shaver for its dry shaving performance, and I agree fully. Wet shaving was the key for me, and now I'm getting the fastest and smoothest shaves yet.
Regarding battery life, the shaves are now so fast that the shaver runs at least 3-4 weeks before I charge it again. Battery life was not as good when I tried tedious dry shaving with this razor.
A tip -- I keep a small ultrasonic cleaner near the sink for cleaning eye glasses. It does an incredible job and minimizes the possibility of scratching plastic lenses -- simply rinse them off in the sink. If I detect any sourness of the razor head after it has dried from the previous day's use, I simply immerse the head a couple of times for about 10 seconds with the razor running into the ultrasonic bath (ultrasonic cleaner is off). I use a single squirt of shampoo from a liquid pump dispenser into water for the bath solution. This cleans the head and eliminates any odor after drying following wet shaving.
Product Review: chris Summary: 5 StarsI found the Phillips Norelco 9160XL to be absolutely wonderful. I have used it now for several weeks. It seems to need charging only about once a week, it gives a very nice shave and is very quiet. I highly recommend it.
Product Review: norelco shaver Summary: 4 StarsThe Phillips Norelco 9160XL electric shaver gives a nice close comfortable shave. Another feature is that the shaver indicates how much charge is left before it needs recharging,it is also easy to clean.
Product Review: Great Tradition Summary: 4 StarsVery hard to find Norelco shaver due to its price and traditional (non-swivel) head design, which I was glad to find on Amazon. Likes: (1) hot water cleaning, (2) 30 days of shaving per charge, (3) carry case, (4) dual current charger, (5) traditional design. Dislikes: (1) charging stand (which I don't use) because of the space it takes up, and (2) it doesn't have a charge status indicator that counts down shaves (only slide rule). Great product which I would recommend to anyone.
Product Review: Great product! Summary: 4 StarsI bought this for my dad as a gift and hoping he'd "upgrade" from the razor but it didn't really work all that well. He says the product is great and gives you a more closer shave than the Gillette cartridge razor but he still keeps using the razor!! My efforts to make him switch completely has failed so far:)
I guess its difficult to move away from what you've used for decades especially for older people. The only limitation on this product from his opinion is that it doesn't trim the side burns as good as a blade and I feel its a bit expensive too. So a negative star for it.
