Product Reviews of Philips Norelco 8140XL SpeedXL Men's Shaver

Product Review: shaves almost as close as a blade
Summary: 5 Stars

i've used norelco shavers for the last 20 years. i've tried other electric shavers, but with my softer whiskers, norelco shavers with their floating heads seemed to work best. however, even with my previous quadra action norelco shaver, i sometimes had to touch up spots that the shaver missed with a regular razor blade. this shaver shaves so close that i have actually cut myself. it is very light weight and the first battery charge lasted me a month. this is a great shaver and now the only razor i'll ever need.

Product Review: The best period.
Summary: 5 Stars

The best Norelco ever my Dad used them I have had 3 this is the third.

Rechargeable, featherweight and can be rinsed to clean.

It makes shaving easy and believe it or not fun.

Product Review: Great value, great for tough spots/long hairs, harder to get really close shave
Summary: 5 Stars

I switched from the Braun electric razors (last two generations) back to a rotary electric razor with this purchase and FOR ME, I prefer these rotary razors. I say, "FOR ME" because I realize that my own experience may be different from others.

BRAUN - CLOSE SHAVE FAST
Both razors are pretty good at quickly shaving the easy spots where the hairs stick straight out (upper lip, cheeks, chin). However, in those easy spots, the Brauns give a closer shave in the first pass or two. It might take as much as twice as long using the 8140XL to get it as smooth as possible. So, the Braun wins the race for getting a very close shave as fast as possible.

ROTARY - BETTER AT DIFFICULT SPOTS WHERE HAIR LAYS FLAT
However, the rotaries get a reasonably close shave for everyday use in a pass or two AND they do much better in tough spots where the hair tend to lay flat, like my neck. With the Braun, I would always have a few hairs that would never get cut. They would get so long that I would eventually have to pull them out with tweezers. The 8140XL get's those hairs every time I shave so that they never get long enough to be pulled (or seen) individually.

8140XL - BETTER VALUE THAN LATEST BRUANS AND EVEN LATEST NORELCOS
To me, I found those neck hairs a bigger frustration so I much prefer this rotary design and I'm very glad I switched back. It's almost a secondary issue for me, but the latest Braun's (and the latest Norelco's) are much more expensive than this model. As far as I can tell, the only difference between this model and the latest Norelco's is that the latest Norelco's have a more modern looking design and they don't have floating heads. Another nice thing about this model is that the top flips open so that you can rinse it under the sink. There is no need to purchase costly cleaning solutions. All-in-all a much better value even if you had a more neutral preference for flat laying hairs/difficult spots versus quick close shave in easy spots.

Product Review: Had to switch to electric...
Summary: 4 Stars

I had to switch to an electric razor due to irritation caused by using a blade. I wasn't thrilled about it, knowing that an electric will NEVER give as close a shave as a blade. This did indeed prove to be true, however, I will give this razor more credit than I thought I would. It is extremely lightweight and quiet. Cleaning it couldn't be simpler, simply rinse under hot water. Charging and simple maintenance are both as easy as cleaning it. As others have said, it will give a good, close shave on the cheeks and other broad flat areas. On the neck, especially under the chin/between the Adam's apple area and either side, it is lacking. I go in different directions, and gently pull the skin, etc. and still I can't it as close as I want. That said, however, it is convenient to shave with an electric. The manufacturer claims that the shaving head should be changed once a year. Since the hair on my face is closer to the wire bristles you'd find on a wheel mounted to a grinder instead of hair on a person's face, I figure changing them twice a year will be a better idea for myself. All in all I'm satisfied with this item, and the price I paid for it. I rated it four stars because this is my first experience with an electric so I don't know what would constitute a five star product.

Product Review: Phillips Norelco 8140XL SpeedXL Men's Shaver
Summary: 5 Stars

I live in a nursing home and bought this electric tripple header because my caregiver took my thirty-year old tripple header that still worked great when he quit taking care of me. A nurse's aid broke my new tripple header after she dropped it many times while cleaning the head over a waste basket. The manager wouldn't replace it since it was a little over two years old. I told him it worked fine and would have lasted many years before it broke when dropped. Now I have extra parts if they break this one and I love the great shave I get. I'd recomend this shaver to anyone wanting a great shave for many years.
