In an effort to save the world, I'm trying to use fewer garbage bags. Well, you can only recycle and compost so much, so I still need to throw some things away (cat litter anyone?). So I found these bags. They are made from recycled plastic, however they biodegrade completely in two years. They aren't the perfect solution, but they are better than the regular plastic bags that stick around for longer.
I love the fact that these have handles that can tie together and that these stretch to fit the diameter of my garbage can. I also use the "Biobags" that are made from corn starch, but those tear easily and you don't get the full use of the bag because you have to save some room for tying the top.
I have read some of the concerns about these not being as green as they could be. They're made in Indonesia, which means they have to be shipped here. (Of course, zillions of bags and other items get shipped at the same time, so technically you're probably using more gas bringing these home from the market than it took to get one box over here. And the Indonesians need to eat, too.) There's also the idea that once these biodegrade, since they're made from plastic, there will be chemicals that still get into the ground. I don't have a snarky answer for that one, but I do think it's better to use these than nice, fresh, new bags. At least these have been uses once (recycled from other plastic) so that's taking 1/2 the net plastic waste away, which means half the chemicals. And since they dissolve in 2 years, the trash inside that would also biodegrade is now exposed to the elements so it can dissolve too.
These aren't perfect, but they're good, and until something better (i.e. practical and affordable) comes along, I'll stick with these. Solid 4 stars.
