Product Reviews of Parker SR2 Straight Edge Barber Razor/ Shaver with Stainless Steel Blade Arm & 5 7AM Platinum bladesProduct Review: Parker SR2 Straight Edge Razor Summary: 4 Stars
While I am admittedly a novice at "cutthroat" shaving - compared to other low-end razors like the "Magic" / Shaving Factory UPC 899344001312 and Fromm trimmer - the Parker is a major improvement.
It holds its 1/2 blade firmly, presenting a stiff edge that won't wander, preventing many nicks. Another safety and comfort feature is the small blade exposure, making the correct shaving angle easier to find. The extra weight of the stainless steel blade holder reduces the amount of force needed, letting you concentrate more on control.
Its so good, that - after a couple of weeks using this, I can't imagine a real straight-edge being better enough to warrant the higher cost and all the work involved in using one.
Just load a fresh 1/2 blade every 1 or 2 shaves and you're ready to go.
The ONLY caution is that the shaft is rather short, making it hard to use for those with thick "catcher's mitt" hands.
Product Review: can be made servicable.. Summary: 3 Stars
I ordered this item because I wanted to try my hand at straight shaving without having to learn how to properly hone/strop my real straight.
From the title and photo I was expecting a metal handle. I realize it never specifically says this, but the title coupled with the product photo lead me there.
What I received was exactly what the other reviewer mentioned - a plastic handle with a chrome finish; although mine wasn't riddled with scratches and dings.
The blades that are packaged with it aren't the greatest. Yes, they are 'razor sharp' and will cut you if you're not careful, but do yourself a favor and pick up some quality blades for this thing - your face will thank you.
I did feel I had to make one modification to the blade holding area. The corner that is nearest the handle can feel sharp against sensitive skin, so I just rounded it off with a scotch-brite wheel (could also be done with a dremel or a fine file).
overall I rather enjoy using this razor, the three star rating is simply due to feeling like I had been mislead about the handle and having to make the alteration to the blade holder.
Product Review: not much to look at but serves it's purpose very well Summary: 4 Stars
first off, the razor i got has a plastic handle with some type of chrome-like finish...different than the pictured item but i wasn't going to bother with a return/exchange. the handle is very lightweight while the blade arm is stainless steel and has some heft. this left the balance a little lopsided from what i'm used to but it wasn't a problem. the handle had a lot of scratches, dents, and other imperfections that i wouldn't expect from a new item. given the price, i wasn't too disappointed.
i just shaved with this and it definitely delivered everything i wanted when i bought it. more flexibility than a DE (safety razor) and none of the maintenance (honing, stropping, etc) of a traditional straight...also cheap. it isn't a true replacement for the real thing but it is better than a DE and much more ideal for everyday use (especially if you don't hone your own straights).
overall i think this is a good value. the performance exceeded my expectations and the appearance pretty much met expectations. at this price, you can't go wrong. give it a shot.
