Product Reviews of Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Casein Protein, Vanilla, 2-lb

Product Review: YIKES! contains sucralose & other artificial flavors
Summary: 3 Stars

I have tried this in both Creamy Vanilla & Cookies & Cream. They are sweet and, after getting used to the slight chemical taste, I liked them both. I definitely prefered the creamy vanilla, the cookies and cream has dark brown bits of fake "cookie" in it that were a little gross at first.

After ordering two jars of this stuff, I became aware that it contains sucralose (an artificial sweetener). People have found this chemical to be a migraine trigger and, as my wife is a migraine sufferer, I elected not to keep this stuff in the house. I did some further research on sucralose and decided that having sweet tasting protein is not worth the risk to my health. Besides, when I was carb restricting I actually found myself craving the sweetness of my protein drink; bettter for me not to be reminded of what I am missing.

Luckily, ON makes a natural version of their 100% casein that is sweetened with honey. This adds a few more carbs and is not nearly as sweet as the sucralose version; but I feel a lot better without artificial chemicals. Personally I would prefer they just drop all the flavorings (inulin, and soy lecithin as well) and just give us the straight casein. Sure it would be lumpy and taste icky, but I just gulp the stuff down anyway.

Like all casein, even from cottage cheese, this stuff really solidifies my daily output (if you catch my drift) so I recommend you get plenty of fiber, fruits, veggies, and water while you are taking this stuff. I take a little psylium husk every once in a while, just to make sure my fiber stays over 40 grams a day.

It would also be nice if Amazon would sell the natural stuff on subscribe and save.

Product Review: casein
Summary: 4 Stars

Casein is a great, long-lasting protein, perfect for right before bed as its aminos are release more slowly than whey. Casein, in general, is bland (think no fat, no salt, cottage cheese), and harder to mix than whey. Optimum Nutrition has here a decent casein, that is not too bad tasting and mixes better than most every other casein I've tried. The price is ok, but I'd like to see it cheaper (who wouldn't?). I mix it with whey and use it throughout the day. I have tried and rejected the chocolate flavor.

Product Review: excellent product
Summary: 5 Stars

Excellent product for before bedtime nutrition. Take with milk and you can't even tell its a protein shake.

Product Review: perfect protein
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this product. Optimum Nutrition does a great job with most of their produts and this is no different. The taste isn't as good as regular whey proteins but there really isn't anything that can be done about that. Casein is a slow digesting protein that usually lasts about 7 hours which makes it a perfect for night time. Highly recommended
