Product Reviews of Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard Natural Whey, Natural Chocolate, 5 PoundProduct Review: Bland taste Summary: 3 Stars
The natural chocolate flavor tastes rather bland...not too bad...not too good. Thank goodness it does not taste like it smells. In its powder form, this stuff stinks.
Product Review: Bring It, ON! Summary: 5 Stars
This is, bar none, the finest whey protein powder I have ever tasted. Whey has become a staple in my house ever since I started doing Body for Life and P90X, but I have grown concerned over time with artificial sugars and unnecessary ingredients.
I started out using Myoplex, then switched to a whey protein complex made by GNC. Both are fantastic, but nevertheless I've been searching for a product to take me to a higher level. Until finding the all-natural whey from ON, I wasn't sure that would even be possible.
One taste and I knew I had entered a whole new stratosphere. I'm convinced it's ON's micro-filtration process that yields the finest whey protein I've ever seen (or tasted) in my life. You're talking to a vanilla junkie here, so my expectations are high. I have rejected more than a few inferior products that tasted like a cure for ulcers or acid reflux.
As soon as my ON delivery came, I opened the lid and inhaled. While not quite the pure hit of vanilla I was anticipating, it still invited me to wet a finger and taste for myself.
OMG -- I could eat this dry for dessert. The consistency is so fine that the scoop settled all the way to the bottom of the container during shipment! I have never -- never -- come across a whey that tasted so good.
I'll check back in if my shakes don't deliver over the course of a series of workouts. But based on what I've tasted (and seen) so far, ON protein will become a staple in my household. You can't beat the bang for the buck, especially from amazon.
I've finally found the product I want at a price that's fair. I will be buying it from now on at regular intervals. No scouring at the local vitamin store. No fearing the price gouge at the register.
Thank you, amazon. Rev up your workouts, people... and bring it, ON!
Product Review: Caution - fake sugar Summary: 3 Stars
This review is for Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Natural Whey, Chocolate, 5.13-Pound Tub. Once I received the product, I was very disappointed to find Stevia in the ingredients listed on the label. Stevia is an artificial sweetener (extracted from a plant). Given the description of the product, "All Natural: No artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners.", this surprised me, especially since it is not listed in the ingredients list on the product page.
Stevia gives me a stomach ache.
Otherwise the taste is so-so, and I find that it must be mixed with a sweetened beverage to be palatable (e.g. vanilla soy milk or a frappuccino). Once mixed with a sweetened beverage the stomach-ache-iness effect is also reduced.
Product Review: Chocalate plus natural sweetners. What else to ask for? Summary: 5 Stars
My family started really getting into working out about 2 years ago. We started with a rowing machine and then added weight room training and cardio (Wife likes Leslie Sansome walk DVDs). When we started the weight lifting, I decided to add Smoothies to our diet. After researching online for ways to supplement fiber and protein, I came up with Whey protein for the protein supplement and stove top cooked popcorn for fiber.
I looked at many protein supplements. My wife and I did not want substitue sweetners. Practically all of them have various versions of substitute sweetners. This one does not. It uses, a stevia derivative which comes from the sunflower family or so wikipedia tells me. It works for us! I don't really go for really sweet chocolate and this is not really sweet, and I do not detect any bitterness.
Here's how I use it:
Smoothie: For two large servings: 4 scoops of frozen yogurt (chocolate of course). 2 bannanas. A shot of vanilla flavoring. Two large spoons of peanut butter. If you really like peanut butter, put more. Two full scoops of Protein Whey. About a 1/4-1/3 cup of 1% milk. Blend it all together. Dump Ice into it until it is as thick as you want. It tastes great. You can drink 1/2 the blender full as a serving. Combine this with 1/4 cup of popped corn (use a little canola oil and NO butter. Mildly salt to taste.). You have a great after work out meal.
Sprinkled on frozen yogurt: Scoop out some yogurt in a bowl(vanilla or chocolate, for me). Add 1/2 scoop of Protein Whey. Take a spoon and mix it together. Really mix it in and don't just leave the powder on top of the yogurt. Eat and enjoy. If you don't mix it in well, you'll get Protein powder sticking to the roof of your mouth. You can't blame the powder. It's protein, and protein wants to stick together. So, just mix it well and you'll be good to go.
You can't beat the price per lb for the 5lb tub. I only wish Amazon would put this on the auto-delivery program so that I can get it for 15% lower price.
By the way, ON also makes a vanilla/Oat version with the natural sweetner. We use this to make fruit smoothies.
Product Review: Chocolate Vs. Double Chocolate Summary: 5 Stars
So - you've been researching the 7000 options for Protein Powder and you've landed on Optimum Nutrition's Gold Standard. Good choice. The quality of the product, the price and the reputation are all great. Now you need to decide on a flavor. After all - if it doesn't taste good - it doesn't matter how much it costs. You're a chocolate guy/girl and think that's the safest bet. If you're getting 5 pounds of something, you need to minimize your risk! But do you go with Chocolate or Double Chocolate? I had the same question, so a co-worker and I each got one and did a taste test. Here is what we found:
Chocolate: very tasty! When mixed with skim milk it was pretty close in taste to chocolate milk. No aftertaste and generally one the better powders I've tried.
Double Chocolate: also very tasty! Smells way more chocolately in the jar and after mixing with skim milk. This one tasted more like a liquid brownie than chocolate milk. There definitely was a "Double" chocolate kick. No aftertaste and perhaps my favorite powder to date.
The "winner"? Both really. My co-worker was very happy with her choice of Chocolate because it wasn't overwhelming and I was very happy with the Double because it was more of a "treat" with a bigger chocolate flavor.
So decide which one sounds like you - and buy with confidence. At 120 calories for 24g of protein, you'll be getting what you need with a great taste.
