This little machine is virtually silent, but produces (distributes) a scent that fills the room and wafts into the hallway. Everyone at our house wants to take it to their room. You use just 3-5 drops of an essential oil, which is enough scent to last for several hours. I have not yet tried to wash or replace the pads on which you put the drops. It did not come with extra pads or a power cord which is the only reason I gave it four stars. Apparently, you can order those separately however. It runs on two AA batteries--I used rechargables. I recommend it.
