Product Reviews of Omron HJ-112 Digital Pocket Pedometer

Product Review: A Great Pedometer
Summary: 5 Stars

This Omron pedometer is truly a set-it-and-forget-it device and well worth the few extra bucks. It's completely electronic and does not use an internal pendulum, so there's no clicking noise and no chance of the pendulum getting bogged down in cold weather (this happened to my old cheapie pedometer). I've had it for about 5 months now and it's totally automatic. Setup is fairly straightforward. It tracks total steps each day, both aerobic and non-aerobic, and provides a good estimate of calories burned and distance traveled. You can cycle thru each of these displays by clicking a single button. Each new day starts a new count automatically. Info for the previous day is saved in memory. It keeps info for the last seven days. I keep it in a pocket rather than on the belt and hardly know it's there. This is one of the few items that is well worth the price! The Omron heart monitor is equally simple to set up and operate.

Product Review: A Handy Gadget
Summary: 4 Stars

I had previously had two pedometers that clipped to my belt. I am a very active person and lost both. The Omron clips to my bra and is always there and accurate. I'm very pleased with my purchase.

Product Review: A Mostly Great Device at a Great Price
Summary: 4 Stars

This electronic pedometer works quite well. For me, I find it works best if I attach the lanyard to my belt on the side, and let the device swing upside down as I walk. It seems less likely to count correctly when I put it in a (....)or pants pocket. I like the automatic end of the day reset. Without a thought I get up each morning knowing the pedometer will start counting a new day's activity. Then I can look back over the past seven days and see how I've been doing.

Product Review: A Must Have
Summary: 4 Stars

This Pedometer is one of the best on the market. It is very sensitive. I carry it in my pocket and it works. My only complaint is the clip. The clip does not stay on.

Product Review: A Must-Have for the Fitness Buff
Summary: 5 Stars

You know you own quality when you get your hands on this pedometer. It's not cheesy like so many on the market. The instructions that come with it leave a bit to be desired. But good news! Customer support is great and you can get through fast if you need them.

You first install the included battery. Very easy to do. Then you enter the time, your weight and stride distance. The latter is not at all hard to do. You walk 10 normal steps, measure the distance of those steps, divide by ten. Then convert that to feet and inches. There are calculators online that will do that if you have problems.

My first ten steps entered ten steps exactly! I was impressed with the accuracy.

The calories take awhile to enter but they do enter. I'm not yet sure how accurate the calorie count is but from all the reviews I've read, they're very accurate. This unit is currently rated number one in Consumer Reports.

I was a bit surprised that I danced about a half hour and nothing showed on the aerobic steps. But I think it is rather touchy on the type of steps taken. It says that shuffling may not read and perhaps dancing could be considered shuffling.

One thing that impressed me and is important to me is that it registered my steps on my Gazelle! Most pedometers won't do that. At least the digimax I have does not and it too is top rated. My Gazelle is old and the computer is broken. So this means a lot to me.

All in all, if you're going to buy a pedometer, this is the one to buy --- hands down.

I wish there were a way to count calories while weight lifting and other activities. But for most people this is the way to go. It will keep you motivated and help you in your quest for fitness. And it will give you a gage of your daily activity and tell you if you need to improve.

I believe the motivation alone is of tremendous value when you're trying to lose weight, or get fit or stay fit. And this convenient unit will help you.

I also love the fact you can thrown it in your pocket or just about anywhere and get results.

Update: I put the unit in my front pocket and put the face toward my leg. I did an aerobic dance and it tracked the steps and calories. So it turns out it does track this sort of activity, which adds greatly to the value of the pedometer.

UPDATE: 9/16/2007 - I had the chance to discover how well made this is. I accidentally dropped it on a cement floor right on it's face. Believe it or not, there was no harm done. Looked the same. Intact and worked as usual. I was quite impressed.

UPDATE: 2/20/2010 - Guess you can tell I've had this a long time. I'm about ready to upgrade. But I've a few comments as a long-time user that may help future buyers. I find that this unit does not always record steps. That makes it less than accurate. Also, I've never found that it would work when I put it in my bag or carried it in any manner other than in a pocket. Moreover, it doesn't always record even then.

Battery life is short. Typically a battery may last three months. Setting the stride is the key to accuracy and it's not as easy to do as one might imagine. I ended out using a typical user of my height and found that gave the most accurate results in my case. For casual use, I still think this is a good unit. But it's not as good as I thought or as good as most reviews have made it sound. I've compared it to the popular Digi-Walker 701 and find both about the same in accuracy but I lean toward this unit as being somewhat more accurate. By the way, customer service is excellent should you need it.
