Glucosamine is a naturally occurring compound synthesized in the body and has now become accepted by mainstream medical professionals. It stimulates the creation of cartilage needed for healthy joints. Supplemental glucosamine is often derived from the shells of crabs and other crustaceans (however, vegetarian shellfish-free glucosamine is available). The Arthritis Foundation recommends it for improving joint mobility, reducing pain on equal par with NSAIDs and helping to repair and maintain cartilage.Chondroitin is a component of human connective tissue found in cartilage and bone. It is believed to enhance the shock absorbing properties of collagen and block enzymes responsible for the breakdown of cartilage. It helps keep your cartilage supple by retaining water and may even reverse cartilage loss when used in combination with glucosamine.
