Customer Review: Best Welding Respirator Ever With One Serious Flaw

Note: Some Amazon vendors have been using a picture of another version of this respirator. The CFR-1 Welding respirator is Gray with a stainless steel mesh on the front. Make sure you confirm the proper North Safety Part Number which should be 4200SW,4200MW or 4200LW for small, medium or large. The CFR-1 Standard Respirator is purple and does not have a stainless steel mesh or a "W" at the end of the part number.
This is by far the best respirator I have ever had for working in my welding shop.
Up until now I only had 2 choices. One choice was disposables which always leaked contaminated air and fogged my safety glasses, yes, even the expensive ones with the valves. I tried them all. The second choice was a cartridge type half face mask. This was either fully attached to my face or sitting on my workbench, too inconvenient unless the job was dusty enough to overcome the inconvenience.
The North CFR-1 because of its unique harness stays with me the whole time I am in my shop. It is right there for me to use for even for the littlest job. It is just as easy to bring from my chest to seal my face as it is to pull my safety glasses out of my pocket and put them on.
It fits perfectly under my welding helmet.
It seals my face just like my 3M silicone face mask and has never leaked contaminated air or fogged my safety glasses like the disposables.
The mask come in 3 sizes, has TC-84A-3878 NIOSH approval and the filters are N95 rated which means this is not just a "nusance" dust mask.
The Downside:
The face seal is not Silicone. It is some cheap polymer that attracts dirt and grime. Think a child eating a drippy ice cream cone and then playing out in the dirt. I have always used Windex and paper towels to clean my safety glasses and 3M Respirator. Windex and dish detergent will not remove the dirt from the CFR-1. Luckily it cleans up nicely with Isopropyl rubbing alcohol. After the rubbing alcohol cleaning, I rub the seal area with baby powder to get rid of the tacky texture that attracts dirt.
Despite this massive drawback, because of the CFR-1, when I leave my shop at the end of the day, my mucus is clear for a change.
The other downside is that North does not market this mask as a serious respirator. It is grouped with the disposable masks. It was difficult to find a vendor that carried the large size and filters. I think if North took this mask seriously they would also have made the face seal out of Silicone. This respirator is sort of like buying a Lexus with vinyl seats, rubber floor mats and an AM radio. Come on North Safety, you can do better.
PS: Go out and buy some baby powder and Isoprpyl Alcohol while waiting for this to arrive.
