Product Reviews of Non-mercury Glass Basal ThermometerProduct Review: Not bad, but a bit of a pain Summary: 4 StarsLike all glass thermometers, fairly simple to use, but takes a long time - you have to keep it in your mouth and not move for 5 minutes. The thing I didn't like was that it can sometimes be really difficult to shake it down, you have to work on it a while to get the mercury to go down. But not always, sometimes it clears immediately when you shake it. Also, it has a case to keep it in, but beware, the plastic bottom which secures the thermometer can sometimes slide out of the case when you're moving it, so it doesn't really offer that much protection. If it falls, even if it doesn't fall hard enough to break the thermometer, most likely the inner glass tube which holds the mercury and the cardboard back with the numbers on it will detach from the rest of the thermometer and move around freely inside, rendering it useless.
Product Review: Confusing at first, but looking good now! Summary: 4 StarsI originally thought the 'mercury' in this thermometer was impossible to shake down, and was ready to send it back and buy a digital one. After speaking with a very nice man at the manufacturer, he suggested I tap the thermometer down onto a post-it note pad at a 90 degree angle (holding it as if I was throwing a dart into the pad) and see if that helped. Still no luck.
...then I realized the blue line I was seeing was a permanent mark on the glass, and the 'mercury' inside was actually silver, and not even registering a temperature. Doh!
After recognizing that it was my own idiocy that was making it "not work," I just sat here and took my temp orally (not a true basal temperature, but just to test it out) and got a reading just fine. The temperature is a LOT easier to read with the magnifying case, so definitely use that. It requires a little rocking back and forth to get the line to appear clearly, but the numerical markings are large and easy to read.
Now, the moment of truth: I attempted shaking it down, and had it completely down with about fifteen easy shakes. Definitely not the problem I thought it was!
So far, so good. I'll be giving this a tentative four stars, and may come back and change that after I use it for a while and either love it or hate it. I know it's going to be a bit of a pain to read the thermometer in the dark, wait five minutes for it to register, and so on, but those are things I accepted when I bought it in the first place. As of right now, I think I can recommend this to others on the condition they understand it's NOT a digital thermometer and therefore isn't going to be as convenient!
Product Review: Great Thermometer! Summary: 5 StarsI think that this thermometer is great. Unlike the other 2 reviewers, it was easy to shake down, and it was very accurate at measuring my temp. In comparison, I find that digital thermometers are a total waste of time and are completely inaccurate for BBT charting. It is also great becuase I accidentally broke the thermometer and I didn't have to worry at all becuase it is mercury free!
Product Review: Non-mercury Glass Basal Thermometer Summary: 1 StarsI would never recommend this product. The material that is supposed to mvoe up and down did not budge (stuck at 97.3) so I threw it out. Anymore money wasted on this product (shipping) would have added insult to injury!!! Very poorly designed!
I'm sticking with my digital thermometer!
Product Review: Hard to shake down Summary: 3 StarsThis is a very nice, sturdy thermometer with a handy feature of the magnifying case, which makes it easy to ready the temperature. HOWEVER, it is very hard to shake the "mercury" (the fake mercury) down! I have used regular mercury thermometers in the past and have never had this problem. This is a particular problem when you are charting and taking your temperature every day. Maybe there is some trick I don't know about, but i doubt that shaking a thermometer down is rocket science! I'd appreciate any tips!
