Our newborn's tummy had a bit of trouble adjusting to breast milk (yes, breast milk isn't quite the golden elixir so many think it is), so we used this from two weeks onward in conjunction with gripe water. We still use it if she spits up and had a sour taste in her mouth...distracts her nicely. It's expensive stuff, but if you're into your 3rd hour of Unhappily Screeching Colicky Baby, you'll pay any price for a bit of peace.
It can also build up in the tummy like a coating and prevent future gas bubbles from forming.
Infacol works just as well, btw.
