Product Review: Good for sun; Bad for vanity

I settled on this product after researching SAFE and EFFECTIVE sunscreens on EWG's SkinDeep database. This is a top-rated product in both categories and won't potentially cause cancer, unlike most other sunblocks. It has a subtle but pleasing green tea fragrance and probably works great, but be forewarned that it will make you noticeably WHITE and is annoyingly difficult to rub in, despite it's liquid consistency. If you're hiking with buddies in the woods, no one is going to care. But if you're looking for a good beach sunblock that won't make you look like a corpse, this is not the product for you. This isn't something you would wear to a beauty contest. It does not disappear as you rub it on. In fact, I don't think it would do its job if you rub it in enough to make it completely translucent. It forms a whitish layer over the skin you're trying to protect.
I wear this when I'm out working in the sun, sailing, hiking, etc., and it's great for that. It is obvious if you've sweated or washed some of it off, so you know where and when to reapply it. If you've ever been burned several hours after applying a sunscreen you can't see, you will appreciate the visibility of Mexitan.
I like this stuff because it does not irritate my skin like most other sunscreens (ones with "artificial" chemicals). I guess I have sensitive skin, because I always break out, even after using "noncomedogenic" sunscreens. But I do not with Mexitan. It absolutely works, and it's reliable. I can now stay out in the summer sun all day long and not get burned.

The other reviewers mention that this stuff doesn't go on clear -- it leaves a white film. Absolutely true, though I've found that if I care, applying it very evenly and smoothing it in as much as I can suffices to make it not-noticeable (I've asked a lot of people whether they could tell my face was a shade whiter than normal -- they hadn't noticed). When I don't care enough to smooth it on so carefully, then yeah, it leaves visible white streaks on my skin. But it's a small price to pay for SPF 50 and no nasty chemicals.
It's also true that it smells like green tea. I mostly like the smell, and other people don't seem to notice it. I asked my chiropractor whether he noticed any odor when he was working on me -- my arms and face were slathered with the stuff -- and he said no (I'm sure he wasn't just being polite). I think green tea smell is a lot better than chemical smell, and I've never seen any sunscreen that doesn't smell like *something*.
I'm pretty sure the stuff works, both from the reviews on the EWG site and the fact that it has so far kept me from getting sunburned. It washes off easily, too, with soap, but seems to be just water resistant enough to be useful for something like windsurfing (where you're not in the water every second). I don't know how it stands up for something like swimming. I'll definitely buy more when this bottle runs out.

Repulsive smell, but puts a film over your skin that no amount of sunshine is able to penetrate! I applied it on my face and shoulders in Mexico while on vacation, and I never got burnt, let alone a tan! The product works really well, and I would definitely suggest this for adults and children who will be out in strong sun for long periods of time, but I could never get used to the smell, even when I was prepared for it.
