Product Reviews of Metamucil Psyllium Fiber Capsules Plus Calcium, 120-Count BottleProduct Review: Gave Me Gas b/c of Calcium Summary: 2 Stars
I liked the regular Metamucil Capsules (red label), so I tried Metamucil Capsules plus Calcium. Gave me gas. I agree with previous reviewer, if you want Calcium, try Calcium Citrate with Vitamin D.
Product Review: Handy to have Summary: 5 Stars
For those of us that need this product, I really enjoy the convenience of it. I tire of mixing the powder which is of course, much cheaper. But for travel and just being handy, I love this product. It does work great also, but I assume most of us know that already.
Product Review: Some pros and cons Summary: 4 Stars
I take Metamucil in its many forms regularly. It takes a few days for it to start working, and it must be taken with lots of fluids or else it can cause choking or a blockage of the gut.
The advantage of capsule form with calcium is that it doesn't need to be mixed in water and I can avoid the gritty residue of the powder. I also get a little extra calcium. However, it may be difficult for some people to swallow. When I first started taking them, I had the sensation that they would float, so it took extra effort to swallow them. They also give me lots of gas, but that gets better with time.
I think the primary disadvantage of the capsule form is the number of capsules that must be taken. At five capsules per dose, taken the maximum of four times per day, a bottle of 120 capsules only lasts ten days. I only take three capsules a day, and that is enough to keep things running smoothly for me. That doesn't give me nearly enough of what I need in calcium every day (5 capsules = 300 mg calcium), but every little bit helps.
One side note: as a general rule, try not to take Metamucil with other medications, as it can impede absorption.
