I have had my Merkur DE (Double-Edge) razor for over a year now. Like many others I was tired of paying through the nose for cartrige-style blades and wanted another option. I did nick myself learning to use it properly, but it really is no big deal. Just go slow, use lots of good hot water and a quality shave cream (Proraso and Cremo both work fine). Change your blades once or twice a week - the blades are very sharp, but so cheap in comparison to the carts that they practically give them away, esp. if you buy in bulk. I have had good results with blades maufactured by Merkur, Feather, and Gilette 7 O'clock.

These blades are fantastic! I bought them along with the Merkur Long-Handled Safety Razor #180. There's a huge difference between these and any other razor I've tried. I've used single blade, double-blade, etc etc, razors, and they simply don't compare. This went through a 3-day growth of beard without a problem. Disposable razors and even supposedly good razors with replaceable blades couldn't even come close. I used to get razor burn every time I shaved, but these blades are so sharp that's not really a problem any more. You do have to be a little more careful simply because they are so sharp, but that's really the only drawback. Also, since they are double-edged blades, I can use one side and my wife can use the other (they're marked with a 'I' and 'II' on the edge of the blade so you know which side you're using.)Product Review: Smooth Shgave

These blades were better than the Shark blades I was using before.My shave was closer than before and very quick, even when I went against the grain .However I am still looking for a closer shave still.I would recommend these for most guys ,but use a good pre-shave oil and a light amount of shaving soap.Product Review: THE Best!

I love these blades. I don't shave that often (maybe every 2 weeks) and my hair is thick and this razor cuts through it with no problem after many shaves (a 10 pack lasted more than a year). I tried a 10 pack of Feather blades and even after the 5th shave I was still cutting myself BAD (even more than I ever did when I first started shaving with a disposable razor) and not getting near as close a shave as the Merkurs, I threw the other 9 blades away I was so disgusted with them. The Merkurs are FAR superior!
