My parents kept one of these in my room when I was very young, and as an adult, I stumbled across one online. It works just as well as I remembered. Make sure to put in in the middle of the room or at least across the room from yourself for best results. Play with the tone and volume to cover up whatever you're trying to cover. I am a VERY light sleeper and I have owned this sound machine for years (actually the dual speed version). My husband sometimes travels out of town and has realized how much he misses having it. I decided to order this single speed one and it is the same as using the dual version on the high setting. Both are wonderful, but if you want to save a little money, this one is just as effective.Product Review: Can't sleep without it

I'm not sure what I could say that hasn't already been said. I used to use a fan to help block the outside noise while I slept since I worked the night shift but the biggest problem with the fan was that I hated the air circulation because I would always wake up with a dry or sore throat. About ten years ago I came across the SleepMate 980 and bought one and I wished I had done it a LOT sooner. My 980 has been going strong for the last ten years but I just bought a SleepMate 580 as a backup just in case anything ever happens to my 980. I recently had a power outage that lasted about 8 hours during my sleep time and I realized how hard it is to sleep without it. For those who were unaware, the SleepMate 580 is exactly the same as the SleepMate 980 except it only has one speed - which is the equivalent of the high speed on the 980 (which is the only speed I use on my 980). Physically they are exactly the same and you wouldn't be able to tell them apart except for the on/off switch.Product Review: Cant live (sleep) without it!

My mother in law thought it was reduculous to spend more that twenty bucks on one of these because she got one that has ocean sounds... birds.. ect. But all those other machines have that creepy digital sound for white noise...and the waves inevitably break and the birds stop chirping as soon as the car alarm goes off in the street. This is the only sound we need!
We bought it for our 3 month old daughter because we live in a noisy part of the city and our neighbors kept waking her up. She slep great from day one... now we use it as part of her bedtime ritual.. bath, jammies, book, SLEEPY MACHINE... and off to sleep she goes!
