Product Reviews of Marpac SleepMate 980A Electro-Mechanical Sound ConditionerProduct Review: A must have for apartments! Summary: 5 Stars
My bedroom shares a wall with what must be my neighbor's livingroom. It also shares a heat duct meaning sound carries more then it normally would. My downstairs neighbors have two young children. Throw in the fact I work nights and sound is a real problem.
I purchased this sound conditioner a month ago and I've loved it since the first night. On the low setting it is perhaps the same volume as a fan on low setting; at the high setting a quiet air conditioner. The sound is steady and pleasent much like a high quality fan.
HOWEVER unlike a fan this works wonders to block out sound. The sound of the T.v. is so faint with it on I wouldn't even know it was there unless I'd just turned on the sound screen to block it.
It also works great for the sound of running feet from the downstairs apartments.
My friends who also work nights are equily impressed by how soothing the sound screen is when on and insisted on knowing where I purchased mine.
I strongly recomend this to anyone who does shift work or works nights.
Product Review: A perfect aid for parents with light sleepers! Summary: 5 Stars
Our twins are very light sleepers, they always have been... and amidst many attempts to get them accustomed to sleeping with noise, nothing ever worked until we bought this sound conditioner.
It was delivered just days before family members from out of the country arrived (amazing timing!). I had just put the twins down for a nap and turned on the little white noise machine. Our guests arrived during their nap and were anything but quiet! But the sound conditioner kept them sleeping soundly. Again at bedtime, I turned it on and it drowned out the noises of people talking, movies playing in the living room (with the subwoofer on!) and other misc. noises that would have otherwise had the babies up.
I am so relieved to finally have some quiet time every day without worrying about the babies waking up from any little noise that is made.
My husband and I are so happy with this product that we are ordering a 2nd one for our 6 yr old, who has trouble initially falling asleep due to noises in rooms near hers.
If you need to mask noises to help yourself or others sleep - this is definitely the machine to get! It is worth every penny!
Product Review: A pricey product, but there's no competition Summary: 4 Stars
I discovered the benefits of white noise quite by accident in the heat of an Auckland summer when I couldn't sleep even without the ubiquitous sheet as my only bed cover, so in desperation I trained a 14" pedestal fan on the bed, at full blast. The people next door had just acquired a German Shepherd and it had driven me nuts all day with its barking. I hadn't been able to concentrate on my work. That night it disturbed my husband so badly he stormed out of the house and up the drive to hammer on the neighbour's door. But I didn't hear a thing. However, using the fan during the winter was a bit of a nuisance, especially when we moved to an area of frequent frosts. Even turning the blast up to the ceiling wasn't satisfactory. I don't mind a cold room but I definitely dislike a freezing one! I did find a clock/radio that had some gimmicky "white noise" sounds but even the best one had an annoying beat that stopped the thing doing its job. Anyway, the clock itself eventually stopped working. Then we heard of this little gadget and sent away to the States for one. I was disappointed that the fast speed soon developed a ticking sound (as though the fan might be touching something) but since the low speed worked fine and it would cost too much to send back for repair I just carried on using it on low speed. I've had it about three years now. I take it with me when I visit my sister in Auckland. It's so much better than earplugs at masking those awful traffic noises! I've downloaded sample noises from the electronic white noise generators manufactured by the same people but none of them has the smoothness of the sounds this little gadget produces and all are horrendously expensive.
I've given the product only four stars (and would have given it four and a half if it had been possible) because of the problem I had, and the fact that somebody else here reported a problem with the low speed setting, but I would definitely recommend it above any of the ones that use electronically produced white noise.
Product Review: A product that lives up to its name and function Summary: 5 Stars
This item provides a nice hushing sound that makes it easier for me to get to sleep, as I suffer from tinnitus.
At first, the sound took a little getting used to, but then it became just what one might think white noise is, a bland, vaguely comforting background sound.
As someone with tinnitus, I can say that, while it does not block the sound of the tinnitus altogether, it obviates it such that I notice it hardly at all.
It is a very compact machine, fitting on a night stand that is a square roughly a foot and a half on each side. Its size allows a lamp, alarm clock, and books on the same night stand, without overcrowding.
All that said, I warmly recommend this product.
Product Review: A relief! Summary: 4 Stars
We have a newborn and this sound machine has made putting and keeping her asleep a lot easier. It helps to drown out the outside sounds while creating a soothing environment for her. I have found myself falling asleep while putting her to sleep because of this machine.
