I always have trouble sleeping in hotel rooms ... either too quiet OR mysterious background noises that keep you wondering. At home, I sleep with a fan on, and I'm used to that sound. I found the sound machines with ocean waves or whatnot to be equally distracting. When I read some of the reviews about this item, it sounded like a good alternative. I have used this on the road, and found it to be just right. There is no distinguishable sound at all ... just a whooshing sound that you hardly notice after you turn it on, but it provides just the right amount of white noise to help turn off the brain and settle into sleep. I'd love it to be just a bit smaller for those smaller overnight bags, but nevertheless, this is a keeper!Product Review: A great little workhorse

This thing sort of looks like an industrial-size smoke detector, but it works like a charm. The sound quality isn't quite what I had expected... the 'whooshing' somehow seems a little synthesized and not entirely natural... but the volume and pitch are adjustable. We've been using this machine for almost a month now, and our little one loves it. Since birth she's been a very light sleeper, which (as those of you with babies know) means Mommy and Daddy sleep less too. :-( We finally reached a point of desperation and decided to try the Sound Screen. So far, the results speak for themselves... she wakes up less frequently and seems to be sleeping more soundly. For that reason alone, this product has been more than worth the price. Some design refinement would be nice (color and appearance), but that's a minor quibble. I've had trouble sleeping because of background noise for years. I finally bought this because I live in a duplex and my neighbors are loud and erratic in behavior, arguing and moving furniture around at 3:00 am. I was afraid to even try to sleep at home after several days with little sleep and my roommate made me buy this because I was ready to move out.
This product is great. It makes a very fan-like sound, but with no mechanical or cycling sounds, or rattling. This is just a constant whoosh. It has two speeds and you can change the sound of the whoosh by changing the postition of the vent holes on the device. It has a switch right on the side of it, not on the cord so it's easy to use. It's even padded on the bottom to make sure it doesn't vibrate.
I used the low setting last night and slept through the night for the first time in the month since the crazy animals downstairs moved in.
I've been relying on ceiling fans and box fans for background noise for years, this is much better. It's a fuller sound, it covers more, and it doesn't make me cold.
As many others have said in previous reviews, this is unlike those pre-recorded white noise sounds. This cannot repeat, because it's actually making the sound as you hear it.
I travel for a living and stay in a lot of hotels. I look forward to taking this thing with me and blocking out the sounds of neighbor's TV's and talking and vehicles, etc. . . It's very small and lightweight, and seems durable.
I don't know why I didn't buy this sooner. Shooting my neighbors is the only thing that would help me sleep better, but this is legal so perhaps a better choice.

Living in the city, I can testify to the noise level outside one's home. Passerby s, cars, cars with loud music and even the noisy or inconsiderate neighbor upstairs or downstairs. This machine is the best. It has two levels of white noise it can create. Within one day I was used to it. The noise is very similar to the air conditioner. I turn it on every night and sleep comfortably. I even missed it when I went to the Poconos for vacation. Hearing dead silence was weird at first. LOL. I highly recommend it especially for people who work 4 x 12's or midnights.Product Review: A must have

When I first used this item my wife and I had it at the lowest sound level. Now we are so used to it we have it at the maximum. Hard to sleep without it.
