Product Review: A Blessing For Apartment Living and Tinnitus!

This little machine makes just enough white noise to help me sleep instead of continually waking up each time my upstairs or downstairs neighbors make noise (and by noise, I mean music, footsteps, floors creaking, etc). It doesn't block out everything, but it helps a LOT. It's not the prettiest noise to listen to, but it's a million times better than complete silence.
I also have tinnitus that can get very loud when I'm in a silent environment and this little machine helps with that too (when I go to the country to visit family)--it takes the ringing in my ears down from a dull roar to my thinking I'm actually in a quiet place.
Thank goodness for white noise!

I saw (and heard) a Marpac SleepMate in my doctor's waiting room. It not only contributed to a soothing atmosphere, but pleasantly masked most of the conversations in the room. After ordering one and using it for a few months I am even more impressed. We have a noisy highway and train crossing about a block from the back of our home. I'm a very light sleeper and no matter what sound machine we tried, the traffic noise and train whistles kept me up at night. But the Marpac eliminates those disturbing outdoor noises, so I don't notice them. The sound it makes reminds me of a large box fan, but without the excessive energy consumption and powerful breeze those fans produce. I couldn't be happier with my Marpac. There are already tons of reviews highly rating this product, so I'll make this quick. It's great for helping you sleep at night (street cleaners and ice removal trucks, loud neighbours especially in apartments, etc.), and great for keeping children or babies sleeping through loud noises (ie, vacuuming, doing dishes, housework, etc.)
If this doesn't work for you, I would recommend an industrial White Noise generator. Last step would be a Noise Cancelling speaker system - however, novices may find them difficult to setup properly.

I had been looking for a sound machine to replace the humidifier I used in my son's room since he was an infant. I was getting tired of the constant refilling and cleaning of the humidifier and was more interested in the noise it created anyway. I purchased the SleepMate Sound Conditioner after reading the reviews and my only fear was that it would not be as loud as the humidifer (I keep the fan on high). Well, with two speeds and the ability to make the tone of the Sound Conditioner higher or lower, it is just as loud, if not louder on its highest speed than the humidifier. It was WELL worth the money & I plan to buy another Sound Conditioner when our baby is born in May.
