Product Review: Annoying motor sound

I bought this product after reading all of the reviews. I tried it for 3 nights and could not stand the whining noise from the motor. I tried different setting and still could not get past the motor noise. I was able to return the product with no problems.Product Review: Apartment living is noisy.

I read the reviews of this product, and I ordered this product being unsure of what it would do.
I have to say, it's a product that does exactly what it says it will do. It creates white noise at varying levels.
There is no miracle product that is going to mask all sounds of people upstairs walking around. The noise would have to be jackhammer-like for that to work, which would cause its own problems. This product cannot wipe away all the pitfalls of apartment living. It is not advertised as a "miracle-in-a-box."
It is a white noise machine, and as such, it seems a high quality one with varying levels of control. I'm happy with the purchase. I do think $50 is a bit pricey, but it doesn't have much of a mechanical sound, and I think cheaper ones might have grating motors that would be annoying and hard to ignore.
I can still hear my neighbor walking around upstairs. But it does mask out reasonable music noise, TV noise, and talking noise.

Do you live in a big noisy city with a 2-year old whose good behavior really depends on his getting a nap, and maybe you or your significant other might benefit from napping, too, but you have unpredictably loud downstairs neighbors, not to mention that your bedroom faces the street where the extremely popular next door neighbor - the street mayor - spends all his time either sitting on his stoop (which is effectively 15 feet away from your head on your bed) chatting up everyone passing by on the street or if no one is around finds the time to break out his power tools to get some major home renovations done??? Or maybe you are sick of the garbage truck or the crazy can-collecting-grocery-cart-pushing guy who does his inconspicuous work at 6 am waking you? Is moving just not an realistic option at the juncture?
Well, even if these aren't your specific problems, but you're dealing with some noise issues - well, the Marpac might just be for you! It's subtle and refreshingly simple to use. Basically it's like a fan that doesn't move air, but has adjustable pitch and volume control. It worked immediately and has been a godsend in my apartment.
You don't have to get some new-age-waterfall-Sharper-Image-white-noise-machine-thingy and waste your money - unless that's your vibe, which is cool. I'm not judging you. If you need something no-frills that simply works, this is the product.

For years we have used fans,kills my sinus, music,my husband can't sleep to it and the air condtioner fan too cold as we live in upstate NY, for noise as we both have trouble sleeping with noise ans such.
This little machine has been a Godsend.
It takes about two weeks to get used to.Now we love it.
Amazon has always treated me well.
I would highly recommend this sound machine.
Product Review: At last, I can sleep soundly in the city

I recently relocated to a condo that abuts a parking lot. Before getting this device, my girlfriend and I would fall asleep between 11pm and midnight only to be awakened repeatedly a couple of hours later by the inebriated who left the local bars to pick up their cars who would frequently yell and blast their car stereos before departing the parking lot. We didn't have a solid week of good sleep for our first couple of months here (a lot of inebriated out there every Thursday, Friday, & Saturday). After giving up that the local police would take some proactive measurements, we decided to try this white noise machine based on the reviews. SUCCESS.
We have had this product for 2 weeks, and we have slept soundly every night. I HIGHLY recommend it.
The only downside was that it took 9 days from the time I ordered it for the ground-shipment to arrive in San Francisco. It was worth the wait though.
