I purchased this unit for my 3 year old son who is a LIGHT sleeper. I opted for the 980 since I wanted it to be effective. Despite having two speeds, it is too loud, even on the lower setting -- he knows it is on and requests it to be turned off!
My son's room is 12 x 14', so I suggest buying a smaller unit for a small room. I do feel it would be effective is sized correctly.

If you want to sleep like a baby, this is the machine for you. It actually works too well--it is hard to get up in the morning because you sleep so soundly. Sounds really loud at first but you get used to it really fast. Product Review: Promotes the best night of sleep you'll ever have.

No longer will we have to use a fan in the winter time. This little devise drowns out all 'bumps in the night noises' that can wake us up continually through the night. It does what it says it' going to do.Product Review: Excellent product

Excellent white noise produced - our baby and preschooler both sleep much better now that they have these in their rooms. The look of the product is not intrusive either, and the settings are sensible and easy to use.
My only complaint is that our first machine developed a rattle on the high volume setting, a few months after purchase. The company replaced it free of charge but we did have to pay to ship it back and it has taken them a few weeks to send a replacement, which is not ideal.
