I was worried when a young co-worker moved into the office next to mine. Sweet girl, but single, no kids, so plenty of time to party it up during the day in her office with friends as staying a bit later is no problem for her. I, on the other hand, work part-time and have to pick up my child from preschool regardless of whether I've cleared my desk for the day. You see where this is going . . . After weeks of screams of laughter, vibrating walls, and passive-aggressive behavior on my part, and I decided to splurge on this sound screen. When I received it, I was quite skeptical. It just makes a whirring noise and I thought there was no way it was up to the task of noisy girl and her friends. Man, was I wrong. The moment the partying begins, I switch my new sound buddy up to high and happily keep working. Occasionally a few beals of laughter float above the whirring, but nothing much. The vast majority of the noise is simply gone. I'm a happier, kinder person during the day, and quite frankly, when I get home as I'm not stressed about everything I wasn't able to accomplish next to party central. I have been trying many things to get a good night's sleep. I had thought about a white noise generator; however, there are so many on the market, it was difficult to chose.
When I read reviews about this model, it seemed to be a good choice; and it was! While it is running, it blocks out almost all exterior sound and much of the local. It does take a few days for the brain to adapt. But after that, you barely notice it (at least in my experience). With the constant, steady sound, my brain stops listening for each sound while I'm asleep, thus allowing me to sleep better.
One problem, it is difficult to wake up while it is running. Seriously, it is that good. The sound is so relaxing, I just want to stay asleep.
So I purchased a small mechanical timer to turn it off around the same time as my alarm clock comes on and turn on around bedtime.
I highly recommend this unit. Forget about machines that sound like the ocean, rain, etc. In my case, that kind of sound would keep me awake as my subconscious listens for each sound variation (your results my vary).
A plus with this device is the different volume and tone settings available. The power switch selects low and high air flow rates (one type of volume control) while the main body turns to change the volume within those settings. The top rotates to slightly change the pitch (sharper to softer).

Do you have a family member who is a light sleeper? If so, this sound machine will be a godsend for you. We purchsed it because my two year-old kept waking every time my husband or I would get up in the night to use the bathroom or get a drink of water.
Ever since we plugged this machine in, he sleeps through all of our noise. This is great for people who have smaller homes with hardwood floors, where the sound of footsteps can be disturbing to sleepers.

I like this noise-maker very much. I had become accustomed to the window air conditioner in my bedroom which, of course, was very loud. I needed something I could use year-round. I wanted a "mechanical" device as opposed to a radio with nature sounds or a CD. I plug this thing into a Belkin Conserve Socket and set it for 6 hours (so it turns off in time for the wake-up alarm). I set it on "high" and it works quite well. I would have preferred it a little louder, but I've been using it for several months now and am very happy with it.
