Excellent white noise produced - our baby and preschooler both sleep much better now that they have these in their rooms. The look of the product is not intrusive either, and the settings are sensible and easy to use.
My only complaint is that our first machine developed a rattle on the high volume setting, a few months after purchase. The company replaced it free of charge but we did have to pay to ship it back and it has taken them a few weeks to send a replacement, which is not ideal.

I was leary about buying this item for $50, but am very satisfied. The noise is continuous, high quality, and has several speeds. This is important because the sound speed I like may not work for you. It drowns out all noises and is quite pleasant. My husband and I (and now the dog) have become accustomed to white noise from a floor fan. Only problem was in the winter I was freezing my behind off. We came upon this machine. It is the perfect solution! We all sleep well and none of us are popsicles in the morning. We put it on the lower sound control. The more elevated sound would be great if you're somewhere there is lots of noise. We're planning on taking it on our next trip as well!Product Review: Fantastic Product!

I have one of these in every bedroom of my home. My guest love spending the night and sleeping well from the relaxation the Sleepmate provides. I also use the Sleepmate 980A in my granddaughter's room while she naps during the day. She...well...sleeps like a baby...smiling. It filters out all the noise outside her bedroom window. Since I developed tinnitus several years ago, I have needed some form of background noise in order to sleep. I have tried a variety of electronic white noise generators, and while I found the sound acceptable, my wife kept complaining that she could hear patterns or beats or loops in the sounds. Finally my wife asked, "Don't they make a small electric fan you can put on a table?" Well, yes they do - the Marpac Sound Screen.
I had seen these in doctors' offices over the years but had bypassed them in my quest for a noise generator for fancy electronic versions that had features I'd never use (changing light colors! Thunderstorm sounds!) and that were more expensive. So I figured, what the heck, let's go retro and ordered the Marpac 980A.
All I can say is that I wish I had done this earlier. The sound from the Marpac is soft and soothing and my wife hears no patterns in it. It isn't, strictly speaking, white noise, but it provides just the sort of ignorable background noise that masks the ringing in my ears and lets me sleep.
The only downside is that it is rather large and heavy which means I'd need a different solution for travel. Luckily, Marpac makes one of those too - the Marsona TSCi-330 White Noise Travel Sound Conditioner which has a lot to recommend it. See my review there.
The 980A has two "speeds" - I use the lower one because I have it on my nightstand. If I were placing it further away in a room I might use the higher speed.
