Product Reviews of Malem Ultimate Selectable Bedwetting Alarm with Vibration - CamouflageProduct Review: A dry night after just one week! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm so pleased with the results of this alarm that I'm inspired to write my first-ever review. Bought this for my son who will be 6 next month and had never had a dry night in his life. We started using it a week ago. The very first night it went off immediately after he fell asleep, and I thought, oh boy, this is going to be rough!! Nights 1-5 the alarm went off two or three times during the night, night #6 it went off only once at 6am, and then last night HE WOKE ME UP AT 2AM AND TOLD ME HE HAD TO GO! No alarm! The same thing happened at 6AM :-) I was mentally prepared for it to take several weeks before he had a dry night and now I could not be happier. He was so pleased too and obviously proud of himself.
I found out about these types of alarms after reading Richard Bennett's book, Waking Up Dry, and highly recommend the book to anyone contemplating using the alarm. No need to buy it, you can get it out of the library. The book advocates using an alarm and there are a lot of helpful suggestions in it. I read aloud certain sections to my son (how and why the body makes urine, how the alarm works, etc.) and I'm sure that this helped. The alarm works by training the brain over time to wake up whenever the child needs to urinate, but it has some immediate benefits too. Previously he slept in Underjams and pajamas, but at least once a week the Underjams would leak and result in soaked bedding. So on advice from some Amazon reviewers, I put the alarm on his underwear, with Underjams over those, and so only had to change the underwear when the alarm went off, because there was very little urine, and we have not had to deal with a wet bed for a week.
A couple of other suggestions: every night before bed I quizzed him on what he had to do whenever the alarm sounds (1: stop the flow, 2: unclip the underwear clamp, 3: press the button on the unit to turn off the alarm and 4: go to the bathroom and finish). I slept in his room every night in case he didn't hear the alarm or forgot what to do. Good thing too, because he would have been too groggy to make it to the bathroom himself, not to mentioned frightened of the dark. Oh, and the alarm is LOUD. I set it to vibrate + sound, and put a little piece of scotch tape over the speaker on the unit and it was still plenty loud enough to wake us.
According to the book, the child is not "cured" until they are dry for two weeks straight as well as another two-week potential regression period. So we have a ways to go. But there's no doubt in my mind we will get there!
*UPDATE* Still dry, no regression yet. He's been dry 5 nights in a row so far. Simply amazing!!
Product Review: Bedwetting Alarm Summary: 4 Stars
My son sleeps VERY HARD. When he is not so completely exhausted from the weeks' activities the alarm has woken him up and he has been able to finish in the bathroom. I'm very happy for the product, but it has not been the COMPLETE solution. My wife and I still need to listen for it and sometimes get him up, but I expect, with some more time, that he will succeed with it's help.
Product Review: Finally! A solution that works! Summary: 5 Stars
We have a 13 year old son who has had a problem with night time wetting all his life. We tried medication with limited success. He had a bladder procedure which did absolutely no good. He is getting old enough that the night wetting really affected his sleep and attitude in school.
This monitor started to help him within a few days. It has been a month, and he is having consecuitive dry nights. It has really helped him to sleep at night. We are also seeing a drastic change (for the better) in him at school. To think we were considering a questionable and expensive surgery, I am so glad that we went this route. If nothing else, this monitor has paid for itself in the savings on buying no more abosorbant night pants.
One note about a previous review. Somebody recommended a room monitor. I would hold off on it. We purchased it, but it has proven unnecessary for us. Your child may be different. For us, the alarm on this unit woke him up to the point that we never heard the alarm. I recommend that you follow up with your child, check the sheets, be positive and reward the good efforts as the alarm helps you. It has really been very successful for us.
Product Review: Good training tool Summary: 4 Stars
We have been using the alarm for at least 14 weeks. By week 12 we did have 10 straight nights of no alarm so we took it off but then he had and accident so we have continued to use it so we dont have to change sheets.
Product Review: Great Product! Worked in 6 weeks for my 7 year old son. Summary: 5 Stars
I was extremely skeptical about the potential effectiveness of this product - but my son convinced me to get it for him. He wore it every night for 6 weeks and we were pretty good at following the directions - there were a few nights when the alarm didn't wake him up and a few others when we didn't escort him to the bathroom - there were also a few nights that we woke him up to go to the bathroom before the alarm went off - nonetheless, after 6 weeks he went 14 days without wetting the bed (while wearing the alarm) and has been dry for several months now.
****TIP - After the first few wet nights, we decided to have him sleep on an inflatable mattress to minimize the ordeal of changing the bedding every night.
